Picked up my new Regulation Police
SN 3934xx, blued, 3 1/4 inch barrel, grips numbered to the gun chambered in 32 S&W Long. Got it for $295 out the door. It has some light freckling all over and I was thinking about getting some 0000 steel wool to work on them. Would this harm the finish? The thing that caught my eye is how nice the grips are. Bore is nice and it looks not to have been fired much, just thrown in a sock drawer and forgotten about. My shop just got 2 more in on consignment, a pre model 10 nickle which has been neglected as far as cleaning but would clean up nice and a Model 66 no dash with a 2 1/2 inch of 3 inch barrel. The person wants $295 each, shop said I could probably get both for $400, told him I was interested in the M&P (I think it's a 3rd change in 38 special) for $225. Maybe I should try for both?

Very nice RP, and a good price. You can use some 0000 wool and oil to clean off rust and corrosion. It won't hurt the surface unless you really grind in on the rough spots with a lot of pressure, so do your rubbing lightly. Brass wool would be better than steel since brass is softer.
That will be a great little shooter.
On the other two guns, it's hard to go wrong if you can get both for $400. If the M&P is truly a 1905/third change, it dates to before 1915, and it may have been renickeled. What's the serial number? Any chance of photos?

Just my 2 cents, but buy both the guns for 400 and enjoy!! For cleaning light surface corrosion try a piece of crumpled brown paper sack saturated with Kroil, or WD-40 or RemOil and rub the gun gently with the grips removed. Let is set a while and rub some more. You'll find this won't ever damage the bluing and sack material is just rough enough to loosen grime. Gary

That's a beauty and a good buy.
Production period of the gun is 1922 to 1927 and can only be identified from the features: the "Made in USA" stamp dates it after 1922; the mushroom shaped extractor knob dates it pre 1927; therefore clearly a pre 1930 .32 RP Third Model. A letter can give you the shippng date, but not the production/assembled date.
I would grab up all three guns at those prices, try for a 3 gun package deal.

Yeah, I agree with Hondo...a beauty and a good buy! 0000 steel wool (though I prefer bronze wool) dipped liberally in Hoppe's #9 will remove the surface rust with damaging the finish.

Got some ammo for it at a local gun show so I will get it out for some range time this week. It cleaned up real nice.

I have been following 32 HEs and 1902/1905 M&Ps at auctions for awhile and those prices are great. Once in a great while I am able to pick up a nice 32 HEs for $200, but guns like your RP is selling at auction for double what you paid for it. $400 for the pair is also a great price. Rusty, pitted, banged up 357s & 38s are going for $200 at auction so run don't walk back to the shop and grab them up. Another chance to immediately double your investment.
