Default .22 cal revolver

First time poster here. I tried looking before I posted and came close but could not find this revolver here. It was my grandads then my dads now mine. No box just the revolver. Numbers are stamped on the butt 36116 and on the grip frame at the base 84100 also in the hinge of the cylinder. Other than that I don't know much. Any help would be greatly appreciated model, value etc.

Model number should be stamped somewhere.

There is nothing, I have read on the internet that the model number is before the serial number on the butt but it is not there nor anywhere else I can see. No number on the cylinder itself either.

Model would be inside the frame below the barrel when you open the cylinder. I believe that is a Model 34 Target. It is possible that it is old enough to not be marked with a model, but I cant tell by the pics.

I'm going to identify it as a Model of 1953 22/32 Target (Pre-Model 35).

Built on the Improved I Frame with a hammer safety block, and coil mainspring. S/N range 101-135465 and produced from 1953 to 1969. I would estimate the vintage of this one somewhere around 1957. This would be just before they started stamping Model numbers on the revolvers in 1957.

Only number is 84100 ( I think the top part of the stamp is not good) below that a tiny 7 then below that av. this is on ( what I am calling), the hinge for the cylinder visible after the cylinder is open.

Thank you I had read that pre model number revolvers had just the serial number on them. My dad has passed and really hadn't paid much attention to the gun until a buddy of mine and I got to talking about them.

Medic204, The 81400 is the assembly work number used in production to identify separated parts so they can be assembled back together, etc. It has no bearing on the cylinder number which is the 36116 on the butt. H. Richard has identified your gun. Ed.

And given what appears to be no wear to the finish, no damage, and little if any use, the value at retail would likely be in the $6-700 neighborhood.

Welcome to the S&W Forum! Your revolver is indeed a predecessor to the Model 35 and a nice one at that! Some readers are a little confused because it is so late in the pre-Model days, and if it were only a couple of years newer it would indeed have been stamped, "Mod 35" inside the crane where you found the fitting numbers. In addition, this variant (with 6" barrel) is pretty uncommon in itself, so the value would be at somewhat of a premium, depending on finding the right, suitably appreciative, buyer. I wouldn't dream of selling it for less than $700 outright sale, and would not be surprised to see a dealer to ask a couple of hundred or so more for it. Congratulations, it is a nice inheritance and is valuable both in actual and sentimental value.

Froggie

PS The pre-War version of your gun would have been the Bekeart or Heavy Frame Target Models. I have the latter and can tell you that shooting it is always a ball. It's one of the truly fun guns.

That’s a gorgeous and practical old heirloom I would be proud to own. I’ve always thought a light weight trail .22 deserved a long sight radius so you’d have a better chance at hitting small game and thus, couldn’t understand why these didn’t sell better. However, as previously posted, their poor sales does make them better collectors’ items. Otherwise, 35s and pre-35s look like the ideal handgun to start children on.

I’d like to know what is stamped under the stock on the bottom left side of the frame. I can’t read it in your 4th picture.

Welcome to the forum, you’re off to a great start with your first thread, and thank-you.

It's just a repeat of the assembly or fitting number. I'm used to seeing that on the frame below the barrel underneath the the yoke (what you called a hinge).

That's a gorgeous heirloom gun in almost 100% condition.

Well you have all the pertinent identification from H. Richards including it's vintage. It is built on the I frame and changed to the J frame in Oct 1960. It would be stamped Model 35 in 1957 soon after yours was made. Collectors refer to yours as a Pre Mod 35, 3 screw. It has 3 screws on the sideplate, one hidden under the right stock. The 81400 # as was said is a factory assembly match # shown on the grip frame, the yoke hinge and under the sideplate. I agree with the values stated.

Great gun! I have a couple in the 401xx range. Not long after yours. All of mine shipped in 1959. My guns are marked model 35 in the yoke area. Its roughly a 1000.00 dollar gun if there are no finish issues. I see that the grips are stamped with the correct matching serial number. Keep them in a safe place if you change the grips to a larger target size.

My favorite .22; it is way more accurate than you might imagine and this one has caused the demise of more than a few gophers. I've got a trophy pic, but it is a bit gruesome...
This one shipped in 1956. It came with a holster, and I added the target grips.
