Not many people know that Smith and Wesson, and Colt, before WWII tried a joint venture on an N-Frame/Vent rib barrel (Colt's idea) in .32-20 for the more affluent "Down South" trade. As this was where a lot of .32-20s were being sold at the time.
Unfortunately the prototype never got out of the tool room as S&W and Colt got to bickering about who's name would go on it and where. Plus Winchester got involved as to just how the cartridge stamp on the barrel was to be laid out, in the words of a Winchester top exec of the time; "If ya'll use the term Winchester, or WRC, or even a W, as in "double-u" anywahr on the barrel we is expectin' royalties..."
