Pawn Shop find....
I was "pawn shopping" today and saw an old S&W revolver marked "M&P" on the tattered shopworn price tag that also showed that it had started life @ $299.99 and had dropped to $249.99. I bent down to look at it on the bottom shelf (of course!) and got a surprise. The clerk let me see it and I casually asked what would be the "best he could do on it?" He said that I could have it for $200 plus tax.We agreed on that price.
It is actually a '36 vintage .38/44 Heavy Duty that has been refinished a few times. It is mechanically perfect. This one is worth a letter, It was someone's BBQ gun once upon a time....
Oh yes....the pearls are real!

A good S&W at that price is always a treasure. I'll
be looking forward to the letter info.

Pretty rough. Even though I knew what it was, I would have passed on it.
But apparently I know nothing about the value of real pearl grips and would have missed out, right?
So looks like you got a rough heavy duty, any plans on "pretty'ing it up"??

I really like the old 'HD'...just as it is.
I would not change a thing about it.
And, ( need it be said? ) I would have jumped on that "Like a Duck on a Junebug!" if I'd had the chance.

Wow. That is awesome. I would not have hesitated. A 38/44 is certainly one of my (many) grail guns. Congrats my friend!

Nothing like finding an HD marked as a 38 or an M&P. That's how I got mine.

If it were mine, I'd start with a good cleanup with Flitz polish to lighten the dark areas. Then I'd strip the nickel off the hammer and trigger and see what it looked like. Those grips are awesome.

My plan is to find out what the factory letter says about it. If it has law enforcement history (fingers crossed!!),I'll leave it "as-is". If not, I'll know what the original finish was giving me an idea where to go from there.
These were very popular with LEOs and I have others that saw police service. (Arkansas State Police,Colorado State Patrol, Kalispell Montana PD).
As for the grips, they are keepers since thay will fit any N frame. But, since they appear "period" to this gun and have apparently been on it for a very long time, they'll most likely stay right where they are.

That's how I got mine too, it was marked model 10. But it was a lot nicer than that (no offense)

Mine was in a local, usually expensive, gun shop marked as an M&P. I told them what it was, and they did the swap I wanted anyway. Cash equivalent of 480 OTD. It's a 1932 5" model, in about 90+% shape with original grips. Sometimes a person can score a good one!

I don't see how you could go wrong at that price.

Great deal! You will love it! Be sure to pull the grips and look on the right side to see if it has a "B" or "N" stamped there to give you an indication of what finish it left the factory with. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy mine!

Like Chris said polish it up bare steel and all the thing most people don't realize if you put a high enough polish on bare steel one it looks better and rust has a harder time of taking hold on it follow the polish with some wax and it will do wonders for the old girl I would have bought it too even if they hadn't came down on the price
