Default Old street fighter 38/44 HD

I picked this up a while back. It was shipped May 21st 1935 to Fishman's Sporting Goods in Springfield Illinois. It was originally blue when it left S&W.
Most likely an ex lawman's gun, it has been nickeled or chromed at some time. Also I am going to try to research the R.E. Kemper name on the side plate.
Came with the grip which don't have a number on them. Mechanically, it is in very good shape, times right and is still tight.
The grip adapter is a repro that I put on. It is an excellent shooter.

Very nice old warrior!

How did you fit the grip adapters with the Magna grips? Is the wood relieved or is there still a void on the horns?

Bob

Nice One! did the letter say anything about it being shipped with a grip adapter? Looks like it is in great shape though! Thanks for sharing!

That is a fine HD! I love the character. You know, I'd never refinish an old shooter like that, but I have nothing against one that is an early refinish. It'd be great if it was a factory job, but regardless, that gun has character!

Years ago I was visiting friends in Spfd and bought some ammo at Fishmans. Spfd is the state capital and that could have been ordered for an early state trooper. It is also the county seat, so maybe a sheriff's deputy. Sure would be nice to find it all out. I believe Fishmans in Spfd is closed, but there is one in Girard which is a small town sw of there.

There's a gap between the horns of the grips and the frame. No mention of a grip adapter in the letter.
Those grip adapters sure help me with my shooting. Factory targets are too big and the magnas by themselves don't fill in that gap behind the trigger guard.

It may have been a City or County LE's gun. I think the Illinois State Police were all issued the same type of revolvers and I don't think they were HDs, but I could be wrong.

Quite right max, Fishmans in Springfield closed and a long time employee James Barnard, "Barny" moved the store to his home town of Girard IL. One of the finest gentlemen you will ever meet, the store still does a nice business, I have always been treated fairly by Jim. Nice heavy duty, take good care of it Moose, Billy.

A possibility,,maybe,,perhaps,,
Indiana Biography Ref. Page

scroll down to 'Richard E. Kemper'
Evansville Indiana
Railroad supt.
This was written in 1931..and it speaks of him in the present.
Other 'hits' I found list him as 'R.E. Kemper'

I don't know how close or far apart the store and this individuals home are in another State,,but with a R/R at your demands it might close the gap some.
Maybe he was retired by 1935 and lived near by the ship-to address.
Maybe he's got nothing to do with this!!

Nice old revolver BTW!
