S&W Terrier for $350.00?
While scurrying through several gunshops in NC and north Georgia today I found a Terrier with a well-worn finish. Serial # on the barrel, cylinder, and butt matched, I could not remove the stocks. The stocks were the proper round top style and the blue was dull of the period, no box or papers. Shiny spots of wear along the top strap and sideplate. I tried offering $275.00 but the guy said he could not negotiate.
It has been a few years since I owned a Terrier, and this was in much better condition cosmetically than my last, but I gave $150.00 for my first one. I guess I did not need it after all.
Was the price too high, or about right?

I sold the last two I've had at $400 a piece.

Pre-War, Post-War I-frame, Improved I-frame, or J-frame? If the first or second, it's a pretty good price, for the third, OK to good, and for the last, about OK. With that well-worn finish, maybe you won't have to compete so much with the serious collector types. Remember, the preceding is JMHO and probably worth almost what you are paying me for it!
Good luck,
Froggie

it was a post war I frame, serial number was in the 54000-56000 range, IIRC. There is another guy there I have dealt with a few times, but he is off for a few days. I don't really need this gun, but I have a few boxes of .38 S&W lying around. Thanks for the input.

Colby,
That is a very early 'post war transitional' having begun c. 1948 at # 54475 (all reportedly have new hammer block) and leaf mainspring. With round top stocks it may even have had pre war flat silver medallions, sharp cornered checkering field and the fine 18 LPI checkering!
I don't think I could have passed it up at that price depending on what well worn finish means in percentage of original finish left.

Me too! Like I said, that would be a pretty good price if it fit in category 2! That's the one I've been seeking for about the last 2 years. I still haven't been able to get next to one at that price. Nice find, CB!

I will phone the place in the A.M. and ask the guy to send me photos over his phone. If I send a USPS money order, he will drop the gun off in Georgia at a FFL there within a week, and I do not have to pay shipping. I just fill out the 4473 at the Georgia shop...located conveniently at the base of the mountain our house is on, LOL!!

Sounds like a pretty good price for my neck of the woods (pacific northwest). You're doing well to find even an everyday old shooter grade Chief Special for that kind of money. Does that Terrier have a half-moon front sight? I'da jumped on it.

For that model and that price buy it. Your lucky to find a Terrier anywhere. Around here (Pacific NW) you can hardly find and buy them in pieces for $350.
