Picked this one up today, can you tell me what model it is? aprox value? at 95% and what box did this come in (anyone have a picture of the orgional box?) serial number 502XXX

It looks like a prewar something, but you need more pictures of the rest of the gun to know exactly what it is, the value, and the type of box it should go in.

I can oly tell you two things. One, I need a serial number, and an overall picture, to know what it is. Two, its been refinished, and poorly at that.

I would say a 1905 M&P 4th change (5 screw) from the late 1920s - early 1930s, with incorrect grips and probably refinished. Is it a .38 Special? Much better pictures would be helpful.

it is a .38

.38 Special or .38 S&W? They're different. Read the caliber off the right side of the barrel. It will be followed by CTG. That just means Cartridges, telling you what to shoot in it.

S&W developed both the older .38 S&W regular and the later .38 S&W Special.

If the gun reads .38 S&W, it was probably sent to the UK in 1940-1942. They used that shorter cartridge. Later examples, after April, 1942, all had five-inch barrels and dull gray finish with smooth stocks.

Is it a trick of the photos or are the grip medallions different sizes??

I think it only says "SMITH & WESSON" on the left side of the barrel, its not with me will have to double check

I could tell the gun was a M&P (likely pre war) from the first 2 photos. The cylinder was too small to be a N frame. Also, the grips are pre war diamond magnas in case anyone didn't notice.

AFAIK those grips were optional at the time, of course rare on fixed sight M&Ps, but still possible.

Ironic that a set of grips like that has to end up on such a gun.

Because refinished, the gun has no collector appeal and will thus be valued as a shooter. But it will make a fine shooter.

The gun is from the 1920s; the prewar magna stocks are from the second half of the 1930s. Probably over half the value of that package lies in the stocks by themselves. If they have a number stamped on the inside of the right cheek piece, that is the serial number of the gun on which they were first mounted. If there is no number, they may have been a replacement set purchased from S&W for installation on a freshly reblued revolver.

We don't want to steal the gun, or make a duplicate - without it we simply don't
know for sure what the gun is.

Even if they're cut down N frame grips, the grips are worth more than the gun. They would bring $150-200. The gun isn't worth any more than that.

I did miss the serial number being added to the earlier post.

This would normally be about a 1923 gun. But - curiously, I do have a gun with nominal
serial number 502XXX, that was shipped in 1940. So - at least one frame from the
1923-era guns was very late shipped. There is a remote possibility that this gun was
shipped much later, and with magna stocks. I doubt it, but it does seem possible.
