Inherited S&W.38 Chiefs Spcl. Model 37
Want to sell but before I list I need info on value. I have S&W .38 never used, original box with reloading tool, cleaning tools in original packaging, blue box original, all paperwork (instructions, parts list, etc) and original packing paper says "volatile corrosion inhibitor treated" and leather holster. Gun doesn't look like it has even been touched. Belonged to my 93 y/o father. Outside of box says Model 37, FIN B, BARREL 2, STOCK R INS P PKR 1, Serial starts with J 194. Can anyone help? Thanks very much

Welcome to the forum. WE are glad you stopped by.
You will need to post pics to get any type of accurate assessment. The model 37 at 100% condition is rated in the Blue Book of Gun Values by Fjestad at $450. Very few guns are ever in that condition that are used.
Guns are worth what someone will pay The holster and loading tool (I assume you mean speed loader) Have intrinsic value aside from that of the gun. I hope this helps. Pics are your friend. Lot's of folks here will help if you post them.
BTW you can sell it on the sub forum Firearms for sale. make sure you read all the rules 1st. Good luck
Oh dates to very early 1970's
Mike

Mid 70's blue Model 37's sell fairly quickly in the $350 neighborhood in SE Florida, while not really a "collectors" piece they make one of the best concealed carry guns on the market second only to the Airweight Models 38 "Bodyguard" with shrouded hammer and the hammerless Airweight Centennial.
Research the laws in your State addressing private sale of firearms from individual to individual as a private sale is where you will get the most for your revolver,
If you take it to a pawn shop or gunstore expect .10 to .25 cents on the dollar offers to buy it .

Nice looking airweight Chief. If you are in western WA, I might be interested in buying it. We've all seen speedloaders, no need for the photo of that but how about a photo & description (maker's name, model, etc) of the holster?
BTW most people post the entire serial number but with x's in the last two positions, that way we can tell how many digits-- different answer on birthdate for J194xx vs J1940xx. Check to make sure the serial number on the gun (stamped on the butt end of the frame) matches the s/n on the box. If the grips are original to the gun, the s/n should also be stamped on the inside of the RH grip. Having the original grips & box and the unopened cleaning kit doesn't make the gun shoot any better but they all add to the value.

Like Hotrod150, I'd be interested if you are in my area. North Texas in my case.
Good luck with it.

Appreciate the additional info. To respond, the serial # minus last 2 digits is J1941xx. I removed right handgrip, and the # stamped inside does match the serial # on the box, as well as on the butt end of the frame. So it looks to all be original. I will post pictures of the leather holster.

Thanks for the photos. This is a very nice looking Bangor Punta era Chiefs Special Airweight. The speed loader is an HKS early style - probably dates from the time of the gun's purchase. I don't know about Florida prices, but I wouldn't let this one go for less than $400 and would probably hold out for around $450, since you have the box, accessories, speed loader and holster.
I would be interested, too, but others have spoken up first.
Thanks for posting on the S&W Forum.

Well, I managed to make a deal for this circa 1973 airweight Chief & bought it two days ago. It is in even nicer condition that I thought, with just the hint of a turn line. This is kind of a cliche, but I don't think it's ever been fired! if so, not very much, and certainly never carried. I'm very pleased, this is definitely the nicest of the five Chiefs I own.
