Default Help hand ejector questions

I looked at a handejector 44 spl. 6 1/2 barrel serial # 164xx today. As I'm not farmiliar with these gun I have some question I hope someone here can chime in and answer. I know from the standard catalog its a second model. the grips are numbered to the gun in pencil. All of the serial numbers match barrel, extractor star, cylinder, and butt. Apon exanimination the top strap has very little erossion from firing but back farther there is an area that has been relieved approx.1/8 wide almost full width of the top strap. The relief is approx .04 deep. is this a factory cut? The gun shows little evidence of firing the recoil sheild is spotless and the bore is minty. The bluing is another story the frame and fore and back strap have about 40% of bluing left the exterior of the barrel less. Lock up is tight as a drum and the action is real smooth. I think it would be a good addition to my collection just nervious about the top strap. Feedback please

I'm pretty sure the factory did that to stop flame cutting, kinda long football shaped, but I' sure an expert who actually owns one will be along to verify.

There should be a fouling cup machined into the underside of the top strap. It is there to provide space and prevent cylinder binding due to fouling. A shooting 2nd model in 44spl is good to have.

As stated, that cupped area on the underside of the topstrap is called a "fouling cup". Black powder loaded cartridges were still common in those days.

Thanks, thats a big relief. I never saw anything like it and it looked to uniform to be put there by bubba, You never know. I called and put it on a paid hold about an hour ago. I wish the bluing was better but it was made in 1921. I greatly appreciate the info and guidance I get here on the fourm.
