Identify 38 S&W Special
I inherited a SW 38 from my father who recently passed away. The serial number is S 88052 and from my research that appears to be a 1905 2nd revision, but the ejector is shrouded which does not match this model. Attached are photos of the gun which might help with the identification ... any help would be appreciated.

First off, welcome to the forum.
What you have is a .38/44 Heavy Duty dating to about 1952. This is regarded as a collectible model, and even more so if the nickeled finish is original, which it may well be. To its detriment, the stocks (grips) aren't the originals, unfortunately.

Added: Sorry. Just looked with a magnifying glass. It is the S from the serial number, not an N for nickel. Let's hope there is one on the gripframe, as SP stated.

Very sorry about your loss.
As Goony noted, it's a 38/44 "Heavy Duty" and not any sort of M&P. Looks like a 5" barrel which is more common on the pre-war guns than the post war specimens. The grips are cheap plastic "stags" that were popular (God knows why given how ugly they are) in the 1950s.
See if there is a letter N stamped on the frame under the grips. That would indicate an original nickel finish.

And yes, you can shoot +P ammo in it...

Thanks everyone ... I didn't really think it could be a MP 1905 due to the ejector shroud and other things, but the serial number of 88052 threw me. The grips are sure to go, now that I know what model it is. Does anyone know of a good source for original looking grips for this model?

Post-WWII 38/44 Heavy Duty serial numbers should include the letter "S" which often gets stamped 1/2" from the numbers. Full serial number would be S88052.
