Default Austin Police Dept. 38/44 HD #58

I just returned from my LGS, and would like to share with the forum my new acquisition for my collection.

Smith/Wesson 38/44 Heavy Duty marked "Austin Police Department 58"

This revolver was part of the first shipment from the factory to APD on 6/3/1952.

The grips are not original to the gun, but are period.

Another Austin beauty! Congratulations. Aren't you about to corner the market on those?

I have APD No. 153 from the 6/24/1959 shipment. It's one of my favorites.

Without checking, I recall there are 249 Austin .38/44 Heavy Duties. Larry must have about three dozen of them by now -- -- and if you add in maybe another dozen in the hands of other forum members, there ought to be about 200 left to hunt down.

Just kidding about Larry's holdings. But he has posted more than one on the forum over the past couple of years.

I'm kicking myself for not having my Dad pick one up for me when I was 13 or 14 and McBride's had a case load of them taken in as surplus; at the time I couldn't figure out why someone would want a .38 on an N-frame...wisdom comes with age. There should be similar vintage 27s/pre-27s marked and finished the same. My buddy tells me he carried a .38/44 with APD, but the Sergeants were issued .357s loaded with .38s.

Just came across this thread.....
I am looking to purchase 38/44 Austin PD #70
This one was sent back for re-finish in June of 1976 and is marked as such on the grip frame and with a "STAR" on the cylinder.

The stocks are close in number, but do not match the gun.

Curious if your gun was re-finished?

I think most if not all of the APD guns were professionally refinished. I know mine (No. 153) has been. I don't remember the frame date on mine, but dim memory leads me to think it was in the vicinity of the one you mentioned.

Well, at least the nickle finish hasn't flaked on your gun.

I hate nickel finishes. But from a historical standpoint, those APD guns are interesting.

I think I read that DPS troopers here also had .38-44's prior to adopting the Model 28. But I think theirs were blued.
