22 combat masterpiece 1957 ish Value
I was wondering if the great minds of the S&W forum could help make sure my pricing barometer is properly calibrated.
I just bought a 22 combat masterpiece ser # 2945xx. With original ser # matched magnas in exc condition, ser # matched box and a set of nice targets w/ no extractor cut out.
The gun is in "exc " condition.
The 3rd edition says that would be 1957 ish, it is not stamped mod 18.
I live in the northeast..
The book (3rd edition Supica/Nahas) says That the gun is worth $435 in exc condition.
It's worth more to me than that for one simple reason, it fills a hole in my collection, but I don't want to be foolish.
Would anyone else pay $700 for this gun, in this condition?
I know, I know, you can't pay too much, just too soon, ha ha.
I know, pictures, pictures, they are coming.
As I continue to collect, is the 3rd edition still a good price reference? Is it book + 10% ? Book + 20% ?
Thanks in advance for any help ?

Prices in any book are out of date the day it's printed and goes downhill from there and how many years since the 3rd was printed?
There's only one way to know what any gun is worth today and that's what the market tells you it's worth today. And it has never been easier to ascertain the market value than with the internet. Find the gun in question in conditions equal to yours in the completed auctions and voila.
Actually your gun has probably had the most threads about its value right here on this forum than most any gun. The gun you describe is $800 if it's a $1.
Start by checking out the 5 threads already provided for you at the bottom of your thread or just do a search.

Yes The non relieved targets on it are a big plus.

It's getting up in the higher tier, but in the condition you describe with all the extras, and the fact that it "fills a hole", I would say it's a buy. I am also looking for a CMP with a certain dash# that will "fill a hole", and if-when I find it I'll probably pay what ever the asking price is, short of a body part. OD

To me, the package you describe is well worth $700. Let's do the math: An all-matching .22 Combat Masterpiece in excellent condition is probably a $550 gun these days, and the matching box & papers would add at least $50. Throw in an extra set of non-relieved diamond target stocks at about $150...and that's not even taking into account the "filling a hole in your collection" factor... Of course, others may think I'm being too high (or too low) with my estimates.
As for the pricing/values in SCSW, nothing printed that long ago can possibly be accurate. To me, the best way to determine current values is to research the online auction sites and see what specific models, in specific conditions, with specific accessories have been SELLING for, not what folks have been ASKING for them.

I would definitely pay $700 for the gun you describe, and then rush home with it feeling that I had made a great deal. In fact, I just paid a great deal more than that for a high-condition boxed specimen with SAT and some extra sets of stocks. I consider that deal a fair one.
The thing to remember is that the number of non-model-marked K-22 Masterpieces probably does not exceed 200,000 -- Pre-17s and Pre-18s together. I don't think more than 10 percent of these could be 22 CMs, and maybe not over five percent. (Initially I thought the number might be as high as 20 percent, but the more I looked at auctions, the more I thought I was overestimating total Pre-18 production.) There are simply not as many of the four-inch guns in circulation, and many of the people who are fortunate enough to come across them tend not to let them get back into the market.
Relative scarcity and collector demand will keep Pre-18 prices high, I predict.

Taking into consideration the current "panic" buying, $700 may have been a bargain. Everyone seems to be grabbing onto any gun they ever thought they might want now as they are afraid they they won't be able to buy them in the future. I tend to agree with DCWilson on the number of them, and when I ran into a Pre 18 K22 CM) in a pawn shop about a year and a half ago, blue a little thin, but otherwise O.K. I jumped on it. I had seen a few at gun shows but they were always priced way up there, and this was < 450.

here is a picture of the 22 CMP
and one last question..
There are no factory markings that would suggest that the gun had been returned to S&W for work, so Question ?...
the barrel flat does not have a serial # stamped on it, is this common or uncommon for a 57 vintage 22 CMP?

My CM and it does not have a SN on barrel.
Yours is not 3Ts so the magnas are standard to the gun and it would be proper to put them back on if you sell it...AND Bingo you have at least $125-140 extra from the Targets.(depending on condition.) BUT I'd keep them !
At $700 you got a great buy if 95% or better.
IIRC, S&Ws are not quite as strong in your area.

I have it's twin # K 2876xx with diamond target's, not original, and target hammer but no box. Got it for a little less than $700 if you minus the value of the diamond targets and box. Had some cheesy faux stag grips when I got it. Had her out today and it's a joy to shoot!

Congrats on your new "Pre 18" K22 CM,
I agree you did well at $700 with all the extras
I didnt see any mention if your gun is a 4 screw or a 5 screw, Also does the cylinder face also lack a serial stamp ?
By the guns serial range I would assume its a 4 screw gun but the low luster blue finished K22s were more common in the 5 screw years,
Of course the 5 screw could be special ordered with the high polish finish but I would think a low luster 4 screw is not very common.
Any one else find this combination unusual ?
