Default S&W 357 Highway Patrolman

I need help in determining the value of my husband's Smith & Wesson .357 Highway Patrolman handgun. It is in excellent condition, rarely used, polished nickel finish, and based on the serial # made in 1959-1960, MOD 28.

My husband passed away and I do not have any use for this gun. Any advice on a fair valuation and how I can best go about selling the gun would be sincerely appreciated.

Texas resident.

Thank you.

You might check out Gunbroker, and search out your Smith & Wesson 28, (model #) then you can see what starting prices on auctions are. There is also a function allowing you to search out "Completed Auctions" on your pistol. Listed on this sites "For Sale" at a fair price should result in a quick sale. Make sure you follow all laws in shipping. Good luck.

if it has the correct grips, and a 4in barrel is a + i would think around 600.00 but gunbroker is a good place to look to get an idea. you can also sell on it gb the person you sell to needs to have a ffl license or a c&r license will be ok because the gun is over 50 years old, but they must send a copy of the license to you and you can only ship to the license address.
post photos for a more accurate estimate.

if it is original nickel you have a very valuable gun. odds are though that it is refinished

Be aware that the nickle finish is a tip off that this is very likely a refinished revolver. Except for a very few brushed-nickel examples made for, I believe, the Florida Highway Patrol, all Model 28 revolvers were blued. If you have a real example of one of those, it should command a premium price; if not, it would be worth less to a collector because of its unoriginal condition.

Mary, what is the barrel length measured from the face of the cylinder to the end of the barrel? Also if you could list the serial number including the letter"S" or "N" with the last couple digits X'ed out if you wish for security reasons. It's important because you said it was polished nickel and from 1959-60.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful replies. I believe the barrel is 6" (see photo). The serial is S20xxxx MOD 28. I don't think my husband ever had the gun refinished. I can post some more detailed photos if needed. Many thanks again ... this is new ground for me.

Mary, that is a 4" barrel (measured from just infront of the cylinder. It has been refinished in nickel as seen by the nickel plated hammer and trigger. this is not something S&W did.

Nice 4" refinished Model 28. Gun was shipped in 1960. Being refinished, it brings the value of the gun down and puts it in the "shooter" grade. I would put it up for sale in the $400 range plus or minus $50. Sell it with the holster and ammo and you could get around $500 for it. Good luck.

Just as a little more information, the Model 28 was intended to be a lower priced "economy" version of the Model 27, which is essentially identical to the Model 28, which has a higher level of finish and workmanship, and also a higher price to match. In that more utilitarian form, the Model 28 gave S&W a much better competitive pricing position in the law enforcement market and met the need for less expensive but reliable service revolvers. Therefore, factory plating, as it adds additional cost, would not have been considered for this particular model. Of course, that would not have prevented an earlier owner from embellishing it by having it nickel plated, simply because he wanted to. As noted, a sure sign of aftermarket plating on a S&W is the presence of a plated hammer and trigger, as S&W did not plate those parts. Such modifications which reduce value to a collector are unfortunately very common in the world of guns, and revolvers left in their original condition will always be worth more than those embellished later (with a few exceptions). At least you know all this from the experts here. Good luck on selling it - it is a nice revolver and will shoot well for its next owner.

I have been searching for one for quite some time sentimental reasons. I am very interested could I see a picture? I live in PA. I am not sure the value until I see it. Can you tell me if it has a 4'' or 6" barrel? Does it have the original box?

This is a 2-year-old thread and the gun was already noted as sold by the OP.
