Need Advice, 5 Screw vs 4 screw 28 both mint!
I have a question, given the circumstance of only being able to keep one.I am coming strictly from a collector stand point.Say you have a 4 inch 5 screw that is 98% but grips do not number to gun, but are in great shape and period correct. But then you also have a like New in box, looks unfired 4inch 4 screw no dash that has box and grips are numbered to gun.I know the 5 screw is supposedly less common in this shape but it seems as if I have seen more of them here and their than the 4 screw in said condition.Which would you keep? thanks.keith

Highway Patrolman started in 1954 at about ser# S 103500. The upper screw ended in 56 at about # S171500. If your gun was a first year production it would be a plus. IIRC the 6" barrel is more common than the 4". A truly mint Model 28 with box is certainly collectible. I myself prefer the 5 screw as it represents a different time period.

This decision has proved tougher than I had anticipated.Only reason I even consider getting rid of one, is to offset cost of a mint 4inch model 19 I have been eyeballing.Even as mint as the 4 screw is, there is just something about that fifth screw I like looking at.I don't know, maybe when the smoke clears I can keep both.I have been known to talk myself into stuff. That I know financially I should not do, when it comes to guns. It's truly like a sickness you can't control. thanks keith

Yes but it is a glorious sickness. I feel your pain.
If it matters, the four-screw package seems likelier to hold or increase its value significantly. But if you truly feel a deeper connection to the five-screw gun, and if a choice absolutely must be made, that is the one you should keep. You just need to decide whether you want to listen to the inner passionate collector or the inner accountant.
