Default 45 Colt Made for Skeeter Skelton by Smith & Wesson.

Hi
UP DATED WITH PICTURES ADDED OF BART SKELTON WITH SKEETERS GUN.

This is the rest of the story about a Gun Built for Skeeter Skelton in 1963.
About a couple months ago I got a call about a Very rare gun that was built for Skeeter. It is now in my collection and will be a part of the NRA display in May at Houston. The gun was built from a 4 screw Frame from about 1959, the frame had a serial number that had been used on a 44 Mag. It was most likely sent to the service dept. and got used to build the gun for Skeeter.
The gun is marked 25-2. I believe that it is the only 25-2 every built on a 4 screw frame. It was built with a 1950 45 Colt barrel cut by the factory to 4 inch with a ramp front sight.
It is a Great gun and I am very happy to have it for my collection.
enjoy the story and the pictures.
Jim Fisher

Hi
Well we are all packed up and ready to leave tomorrow we have had a very busy 4 days.
We have meet a lot of nice people and some special visitors.
We had Past president of the NRA at our booth to day, John Sigler. He spent time visiting and looking at the display. Also we had the 1st vice President of the NRA Allen Cors, both were very interested in the special guns on the display.
The Visitor that we enjoyed the most was Skeeter's Son Bart who came to see his dads gun. We spent a lot of time visiting with him and talking about his dad and he said that his mother will be thrilled to see the pictures of the display.
see pictures attached.
Jim & Judy

Jim...Super gun formerly owned by one of my favorite gun writers!!!! Does the revolver have an extrator rod with a left-hand thread (small relieved area behind the knurled tip)?

Default Skeeter's gun

Most excellent.....congratulations on your acquisition. Skeeter Skelton was one of my "heroes" as I read all his articles, most of which I still have. He was a huge influence on me when it came to guns, calibers, loads, gear , etc. He probably had some influence on my choice of careers, 34 years in law enforcement, some of which was in his "neighborhood". Glad to see a piece of history has been found and has a good home.

I remember reading about that.
The letter says it's a 1955 Target Model. With that barrel, isn't it actually a 1950 Target Model?

Jim
the only reason it is listed as a 1955 is because when it was put together thats the only model that was in production. They had to have some way to charge it out.
Its still a one of a kind made from all 1950 parts the barrel and cly are 1950 the frame is
a 4 screw from 1959. the grips are non relieved targets from about 1955.
But it is a great gun. In Skeeters book he talks about this gun and says it is one of the best shooting 45 colts he has shot.

Roy Jinks erred in the title of the magazine he mentioned. It was actually, Gunsport. (The invoice had it correct.) I wrote for it, as did a friend. He was better known later as a knife writer, but was Shotgun Editor there. Some of my first articles appeared there, and I was lucky that they didn't owe me money when they folded. I think Skeeter mentioned that they stiffed him on some fees. But they ran some good articles by excellent writers.

Yes, and you guys put a lot of gunny Ideas in my adolescent head, but nuthing Ruger ever stuck, well I did have a 44 Flat-Top, now that is one I wish I had back, but the only one I have any feelings for, now my Smith and Wessons, all sweet, and now I'm missing my 25-5 that was also a shooter, but I just have to console myself with the 3.5 inch model 27-2 from about 1967??? Wow!, I love this old stuff. Billy---Poh boys gots to rotate their stock, shoot.

Billy-

I like Ruger's DA revolvers, too. I'd buy one today over a new S&W. Surprised that you'd buy a 3.5-inch M-27. Skeeter sure liked the five-incher, and I understood, though having tried both, I prefer the six-inch. I think it's the best balanced version of that gun and gives better ballistics than shorter barrels.

I only met Skeeter once, at the SHOT show. We talked for awhile, and I liked him. I think I read all that he wrote. He was a very savvy handgunner. Brian Pearce is his successor, I believe.

Congratulations, Jim.

That is a gun that Smith & Wesson definitely should have cataloged and made a bunch of.

Skeeter left us much too soon, of course. I met him a couple of times at NRA & SHOT shows. Usually in the Hospitality Rooms. Skeeter was known to take a small libation occasionally, perhaps more than occasionally! However he was a great gun writer.
Jim, Did you get this gun from Bart?

Skeeter's writeing is what got me to convert a M28-2 to .45 Colt back then.

I miss his storys & saved many of them.
Had an old 1917 Colt made up like in one of his stories.

If I recall the old article correctly, Skeeter considered it a combination of 1950 (tapered barrel) and 1955 (3Ts) characteristics. No reference to cylinder and extractor.

Skeeter was IMO the absolute best of the "handgun writers" and a fine storyteller. I sure do miss him, thanks for posting the pictures of his S&W!

Fascinating....

Funny thing, my "collection" is aimed at .38 and .357 caliber S&Ws but when I looked at that picture I thought to myself, "Self, you still need to get a Model 25 in .45 Colt".

Wow! What a treasure to find. I have been a Skeeter fan since I first read his stuff in a borrowed 1971 issue of "Shooting Times". After his passing, the magazine just wasn't the same. Because of him, I discovered the M27 and have several, including a 5 incher. Brian Pierce could be his successor. Thanks for sharing.

Congratulations on an excellent purchase and thank you for sharing.

It is primarily Skeeter Skelton as to why I became a "handgunner". And it is his fault alone that I have .357s and .44 Specials.

When he left Shooting Times so did I.

His writings were, to me, more in line with "story-telling" than the minutae of handgun collecting or the deeper technicalities of reloading. But everything he wrote was interesting, informative, and colorful. He wasn't trying to sell you a product he was selling you a life-time passion. As such his became mine.

I think I actually missed meeting him a few years before he passed away. I was in the shopping mall in Albuquerque and a man who looked exactly like him, all the way down to the boots, was standing inside the door of a toy store as what appeared to be the wife was shopping. I stood a distance away and intently scrutinized this man trying to decide if he was Skeeter and if I should dare walk up and ask if he was. At the same time he noticed me and was "scrutinizing" me as a retired lawman would probably do. I still think it was him and was too intimidated to ask.

If he was watching you, too, it was probably him.

I once asked if Sheriff Jim Wilson was at the Shooting Times booth at the SHOT show. Someone said that he was around and to hang out awhile and he'd be back.

A few minutes later, he walked over and greeted me. He had been studying me from a distance. People like that are cautious. They tend to have enemies who don't wish them well.

Most writers are willing to meet fans. One exception may have been Robert B. Parker. A fan wrote soon after his death a couple of years ago that he'd seen Parker in a store, but the man glared at him, as if daring him to approach. He didn't. But Robert B. Parker had a huge following for his crime novels. No gun writer has that large a fan base, although some have thought they did.

And who the fans are determines whether an author wants to meet them. Good Lord, John Wootters, Jr. had readers who couldn't even spell his name correctly. Look how some on this board spell and the way they use language. It plays right into the gun owner stereotype the anti-gunners treasure and promote. Most of these good folks are nice people, but they lack polish and refinement and often aren't too easy to have a stimulating conversation with. And writers are real people, with the usual priorities and limited time as anyone else has. But I think that most gun writers I've met would be willing to talk briefly with a reader if they didn't stay overlong or sic anyone else on them when they were shopping with their wives.

I've met a couple who seemed elitist and one who preferred privacy, perhaps because he didn't seek the limelight and probably wrote mainly because he needed the money. He was also dying with cancer. Two who left Africa when living there became intolerable seemed unhappy with the need to promote products and the glamor image that some writers cultivate. Both struck me as very deep men who had vast experience, but who shunned self promotion. I think they were uncomfortable around the peacocks among their peers. I never saw them interact wih fans; just in the Press room or hospitality suites at shows.

If you approach an author respectfully and don't bluster or seem a bore, many will talk to you. David Lindsey and Suzanne Arruda both spent considerable time with me answering questions after I mentioned aspiring to write mysteries. Mrs. Arruda even asked me about suitable rifles for her heroine and was kind enough to credit me for that advice in her most recent books. I was proud to show that acknowledgement to my children.

Skeeter impressed me as being pretty down to earth and relatively approchable. You should probably have asked if the man you saw was him and mentioned that you were a reader. He might have been relieved that you weren't watching him for a more sinister purpose!

Reading Skeeter's articles influenced most of my handguns purchases, like my .32-20s, a few M19s, a M24-3, a M25-5, and a 5" M27.

Now this M27 didn't stay a .357 for very long after I bought it. I found a 1950 .44 Special barrel and had the cylinder rechambered. I carried it as a young sheriff's deputy and as a city cop. I later had it cut to 5" and reblued. It ain't for sale at any price.

Add me to the list of M-28-2 "converters" as well. I did a .44 Special.

Bought a 1950 barrel from J&G Rifle Ranch in Turner, MT for the Princely sum of $39. Sent the whole shebang to IIRC Dave Woodruff? He installed the barrel, reamed cylinder to .44.special and returned it in about 2 weeks.

The gun shot brilliantly. So of course in a few years I sold it.

Congratulations. Thanks for sharing. Skeeter had tremendous impact on a whole Generation of readers and hand gunners. I read everything I could by him, and yes subscribed to Shooting Times to get his articles. He enjoyed putting together or upgrading an old SAA out of parts in his "War Bag". One gun he mention as probably his favorite if he had to choose one may have been a 27 with a 5" bbl. Someday I'll find one in the right deal. I pulled out a Skeeter book a few months ago and reread it. I always thought he would be a good one to ride with. Thanks again.

The first line is the reason I seriously suspected it was Skeeter.

The second line is why I later on felt bad about not approaching him, he might have been a bit concerned. I wasn't trying to stare or ogle but then again I was looking at him...........pretty suspicious behavior I would think for a lawman to see.

Skeeter Skelton was approachable. I met him at the NRA convention when it was in Salt Lake City back about 1978. He was sitting in the SHOOTING TIMES magazine booth Sunday morning, looking a bit worse for wear (due, doubtlessly, to the previous night's honors). I walked up to him, reached in my pocket and handed him a handloaded .44 Special cartridge with a cast SWC in it. He eyeballed it, looked at me, looked around, stood up (he was a lot taller than I had pictured him) and we went and got a coffee and a coke together. He talked to me for over a half hour, asking me about what I liked to shoot as much as he talked about what he liked.

Great story teller, which made him such a great writer. We won't likely have another like him if just because the world today doesn't offer the kinds of experiences that shaped writers like Skeeter Skelton, Bill Jordan, Jeff Coooper and others from that select pool.

I was born and raised in Hereford in the 50's and 60's and only have vague recollections of Sheriff Skelton. I asked my father if he knew Skeeter Skelton and he said no, he knew Charles Skelton the Sheriff. He said the Sheriff was one of the smartest men in town and spoke fluent Spanish and that's why he went to the Border Patrol. To this day, very few know that they had a renowned expert and author as one of their native sons. In his days in Hereford, the only sport shooting that got reported on locally was opening day of pheasant season.

Great gun, Jim. Good for you.

I loved Skeeter's stories. There may have been better writers here and there throughout time, but NOBODY could set the hook in you quicker than Skeeter!
We lost a good one too early. He died from complications after a relatively safe surgery.

Once upon a time...1972...I was working as asummer itern with US Customs in Houston. At lunch time when all the "girls" were out to lunch I answered the phone and a voice on the other end asked for one of the agents in the office so I transferred the call. A little while later the agent came into my office and asked if I knew who the caller was..I had no idea. Knowing that I was a "shooter" the agent said that was Skeeter Skelton who he had been partners with down on the border several years before and proceeded to tell me an hours worth of Me and Skeeter tails from the border.

Because he was also one of the three scribes who pushed for the .41 Magnum I had his name engraved along with Bill Jordan and Elmer Keith on the cylinder of a stainless custom Reeder .41 Magnum...

I have read most of what Skeeter wrote but to be honest I have no recall of that 25-2....but it is a beautiful one of kind gun and thanks for sharing...

"He said the Sheriff was one of the smartest men in town and spoke fluent Spanish and that's why he went to the Border Patrol."

I think, from reading Skeeter's writings in Shooting Times magazine, he learned his Spanish after he joined the Border Patrol. One "Hipshots" column, in the December, 1975 edition, he wrote about his Border Patrol academy experience and his first 12 months on the border, which was a probationary period in which he was assigned to work with a senior patrolman. The senior was responsible for making sure the probationer learned how to do the job, learned immigration law and Spanish, and prepared him to pass the examinations given at the end of the probationary period.

Skeeter was assigned to a horse-back patroled border sector headquartered in Amado, Arizona, just north of Nogales, Mexico. His senior was a veteran named Buck Smith. Skelton wrote:

"I felt pretty secure about the Spanish part, because Buck, unlike many supervisors, had not been teaching me to say, "Where were you born?" or "Do you have a passport?" Instead, he had required me to put into Spanish such useful phrases as "The farmer got hit with a bucket of _ _ _ _" and "The cow jumped over the moon." I have been able to communicate with Spanish-speaking people ever since."

The man had a way with words!

As to the 4 screw 25-2.
I worked for S&W and in 2000 my counterpart in FL
(Regional Sales Manager) had found two 4 screw frames with lanyard loops from someone at the factory. He had the frame mated with two 5" 45 colt barrels that he had also found. I got one and he kept the other.
After getting canned during "the troubles" along with 250 others because of the boycott, mine had to go up for sale. Somewhere in NC someone has a great gun, I know I hated to part with it.

Beautiful Handgun, great story, and Skeeter was My favorite gun writer as well.
I especially love the "Jug Johnson" saga, that still makes me chuckle to this very day!

Jim,

Have you had the stocks off your gun? I'm curious if Skeeter's name is stamped under them on the grip frame. I have a stamp that came from Skeeter's estate that I'm told was used by him to mark some of his guns - usually under the stocks on the grip frame or on the underside of the barrel.

Thank you very much for sharing this gun with us. It is fantastic!
