Can someone please explain why this one went so high? I would figure for the final hammer amount that the tools and paperwork would have been there. Granted, it is very, very nice but...........

There's no accounting for such idiocy. It's a 99% post-war K-22 in the gold box. Very nice. I have three like that in the box and I will sell any of them for that price!

Why?
Because some people have a lot more money than me and don't mind spending it to get what they want.
Chump change to some people.

Well, the photos certainly match the description of "new in box". I'd guess that a couple of people put a very large premium on its apparent virgin condition. I think that it went for more than twice what I'd value it at, but then again, in a few more years how many of them things are going to be around? Probably a better investment than Greek bonds, today anyways. -S2

WOW. I'm continually dumbfounded as to why certain sellers get multiples of a guns worth.

You should be able to buy THREE at that price, and probably with money leftover.....

Looking at the bid history it would appear that the guy who won had decided that he was gonna have that gun regardless of cost.
Hey, if you can afford it..........

Holy cow, $3326USD. Im not being picky, but does the top screw have a very slight nick, and the side plate removed? Now dont get me wrong, a real beauty and quite a find, but 3326? I guess this is the state of our hobby. Holy cow.

The same happened with motorcycles and muscle cars, collectors. Well, collectors with lots of money to spend and lots of time to look. Priced the average joe right out of being able to afford what used to be reasonably priced classics.

To a homeless guy, that's a lot of money. To a guy that just sold his dot com computer company for 10 billion dollars, that's walk around money.

Life is short and money can only be used while you are here. If you got it, and you want it, price is just a number...

Like several sellers on goingbroker, he gets top dollar by having good description, lots of high quality photos. I don't know the seller but most of those who get top dollar also stand fully behind their description and buyer's satisfaction. It really makes a difference.

Go figure huh? I have seen some amazing things on GB. Like the time I saw a Pre17 I had previously sold along with an un-numbered gold box come up for auction. Now that box was the "original and numbered gold box." Caveat Emptor.

I might have gone with a boxed Outdoorsman for that price.

In the last two weeks about four very high condition boxed K22s sold in the 1000 to 1600 range. One a four digit large ejector rod k22.

Unfortunately Shill Bidding is fairly common on Gunbroker,Yet another reason to set a limit and stick to it.

I did not post this because I thought that there was something strange going on. I don't think there is. If you look at the 2 "buyers" feedback, they both buy some nice stuff at top prices from bigtime sellers.

I just thought I must be overlooking something that makes this particular gun a "gem". Like bdGreen said "People have money. People have priorities. The buyer may not be a wealthy person, but, we got to see where his priorities were at that moment. Most of us have done that." I know I have overpaid a few times for something I really wanted or thought I would never have a chance at again.

1. Excellent, focused pictures with sharp detail.

2. NIB gun with 'new condition' box.

3. Two determined bidders, one with bankroll bigger than other bidder's ego.

I have done this 'bidding war' twice to get a particular item I really wanted -- for a whole lot less money by a factor of almost 4 or 16. Human nature and ego can be powerful influences at times. In both cases the other bidder(s) could have had it for just $5 more because I was at my limit.

There were about 6 or so bids over value by other bidders, did you see those too? Several guys got involved with and excessive bids. I don't get it either. Maybe testosterone? I got to have it ...you can't.

4 Reasons I can think of:

1) condition
2) original box & paper
3) older version (pre numbered)
4) great photos, great listing

For many of us the chase has no thrill, it's only a means to an end. I've overpaid for several of my revolvers, not in the same league as this one. So instead of hours searching for the right revolver at the right price, I'm spending hours enjoying my new revolver.

Remember money can always be replenished, but time never can be..

Here we go again using words like 'idiot' and 'idiocy' because we don't think the price was reasonable. I doubt very much that the winning bidder is an idiot or he wouldn't have that kind of money. I think people who have money get the bug to own beautiful guns and don't worry about price.

Those who feel distress over this kind of spending should start thinking about selling the guns they already own and get some of the "idiot money".

Can we get a LOUD and LONG Amen here......

That reminds me of an old commercial on a radio station from MANY years ago - and I can't even recall what they were selling, cars, clothing, no idea....

"Money talks; nobody walks..."

If you want to spend money you can buy anything - and if you have the money to spend, well, it's your money, do what you want with it. I don't know why people pay 4 and 5 thousand dollars for Colt Pythons, either, they're great guns but not worth that kind of money......TO ME! But maybe not to you!

And so it goes.......collectors and people with money to burn can inflate the market on anything.

And more power to them, says I; I don't ever argue with succe$$!!!

I must confess I too have gotten carried away in a bidding competition. Sometimes I was the winner, sometimes not. I have gotten better at setting a limit and sticking to it (or close anyway). I tell myself that whatever gun is up for auction is in all probability NOT the only one ever made so I stand a good chance of finding another. Back when I was able to ride my Harley, I always had a hankerin' to own a Knucklehead (classic pre-war H-D). I learned that there was a large market overseas that would pay huge sums for older Harleys and it made it hard for a working stiff to afford one. I am wondering if there might be the same thing going on with classic S&Ws. Things that make you go, "Hmmmm...?"

I got into a bidding war on a M58 recently. Had stag grips and was an excellent condition S model with box no papers but think it had the tools. I bid up to around $1350 and lost to a high of $1384. I made my last bid, left my brother's house and couldn't get a good signal so couldn't keep up with the bidding.
I'm afraid that if I could have, I might have gone even higher because I really WANTED that revolver!
How often do you see M58s going for that much?

I'm very happy with the price. These Like NIB firearms are getting harder to find and the price reflexes this. I know everyone wants to pay what they did back in the 80's and 90's but those days are over. It's getting to the point that you have to have a pretty big bank roll to collect fine guns.....

Incredible to think a model 10 of any ilk could bring $1600.00 .

But it did. I guess.

Same seller. Same buyer.

Sounds like this buyer wants the guns from this 40 year old collection and is willing to pay any price to get them.

Either that or three individuals are purposely inflating the prices of NIB S&W's and willing to pay the GB fees to do so.

Either way, its great for those with nice collections waiting for the day to sell but stinks for those still trying to acquire....

The person who purchased the gun is not an "idiot". The over the top bidding on Gunbroker is "idiocy". I know lots of people with "money"who don't overpay for things. When these people are bidding on old S&W's it is incumbent upon them to do their homework. I think they just get carried away in the bidding process.
