Hey folks,
Looking for production date for a 32 WCF CTG
Serial number is 89531. Picture attached.
Good but not great shape, hasn't been shot in years.
Value?
Thanks Mozone

Probably about 1920/21. If the action is sound, value is likely to be in the range of $275-350 depending on what part of the country you are in.

That gun is way beyond my expertice, but I'd guess that it's a 1905 4th from between 1915 & 1920. Interestingly, they started heat treating at ser # 81287, so yours is is a bit beefier than it's ancestors. I'd guess it would bring $500 on a good day if you could shine it up a bit. Nice gun.

I'd go with the earlier date but not the $500. It would have to be a very good day indeed.

We can narrow the date down on this one quite a bit.
Heat treatment on the cylinders began at 81287 as stated above, and this happened on September 2, 1919. Serial number 109161 came off the line on June 2, 1920; it was the first frame with the modified rear sight (square notch) and the flat top strap. I think that would tend to date production of your revolver sometime late in the year 1919. (Source: Neal & Jinks, Revised Edition.) Of course, it could have shipped later, since S&W did not ship in serial order.
I agree with DWalt - $500 would be quite optimistic for this revolver.

BTW - the stocks would also argue for a 1919 ship date, since this style disappeared in 1920. Some of them could have shipped in early 1920, but they were being phased out by that time.
And welcome to the Forum!

Jack,
Check this date again, Jinks or not. 1922 is the year generally credited as being the year for the new style sights. I have several in my list with significantly higher numbers which were reported as shipping several years after this date, 2 in the 108500-600 range, that shipped summer 1922.
I agree OP's revolver can't date later than 1919.

Well, it could be wrong, of course. But June 2, 1920, is the date given by Neal & Jinks on page 89 of the Revised Edition (copyright, 1975).
