side panel interchange?
Do side panels general fit between same frame/similar era guns or is it more complicated? You do see some awesome guns go below market value, apparently due to side panel inscriptions. Can those panels just be traded to get rid of pesky inscriptions?
Thanks

The sideplates are individually fitted, and I don't think it is a DIY job. Also, the finish would probably not match afterward. Others here will know for certain.

The panels are numbered to the gun, a different panel may or may not fit. Removing an original part is bad juju and lowers value.

Thanks for the replies. I did not realize they were numbered; I have never noticed the numbers. Where are the numbers? Thanks.

They are numbered on the inside.

Wow! That's good information and it seems like something I should have noticed by now.
Thanks.

It has been said that the numbers on the frame and the yoke are meaningless but if you remove the sideplate you will see that the number on the back matches the frame and yoke. These three parts were the first fit together.

So are we talking fitting numbers, not serial numbers?

Sometimes, you can get lucky and fit an another sideplate. I have been able to do it twice. It's trial and error.
If you ever find a K frame that needs a sideplate, PM me. I have managed to pick up a number of them over the years.

You can tell if the yoke has been replaced w/o the assembly because it's also serial numbered to the gun, but only the assembly # will confirm the sideplate is original.
