Smile Pre 29 "Plain Jane" 4" Blued - Mint with The Goodies

I picked this up a year or so ago and rediscovered it in my safe a few Saturdays ago when I had the camera out. I kind of liked how she took to the camera and hope that you enjoy the photos as well.

Thanks for letting me share,

If that's plain I'm not sure I could handle fancy. Really elegant, and I'm very envious.

All:

Thanks for the comments. Isn't it amazing the finish that S&W put on their basic 44Mag's? They really are works of art. Then... throw in a very cool case and the corresponding tools and it is a very nice package.

BTW: This one (SN S177385) came to me with the tools that you see in a brown paper sleeve. This is the only pre 29 that I have that appears to have come with a blued SAT. I have seen photos of several others with the blued SAT, but the rest of my pre-29's have the aluminum knurled handled SAT. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks again,

Richard...I think it is unlikely the blue/black sight screwdriver is original to your revolver. It should be a sight screwdriver with an aluminum handle. The brown paper wrapping suggests 1955 or earlier and your revolver dates to 1957.

It is a really fantastic finish. I know that Colt's "Royal Blue" finish could not be any better and, in alot of circles, it is considered the best. Was the polishing better on these guns or is there a different reason for their great finish?

I agree that the Pre-29's seem to be finished especially well. My lone Pre-29 compares well to my Pythons from the 50's and 60's. While the later Pythons (70's-90's) are even more polished I believe they lost some of their character (and authenticity). The 60's and older S&W's definitely have a different 'hue' to them; one which I've grown very fond of.

I cannot remember for sure, but I seem to remember Doc44 saying that they did receive a bit more special attention.

Bill: Pleased correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks,

I'm glad this one came back to the top, otherwise I might have missed it. Plain Jane is way off the base. It has everything one could want in a post WW II gun. Beautiful.

Richard, the combination of polish and camera lighting almost make this one look like a pinto. Nice example.

What hasn't already been said? Did anybody say.........crummy, man, crummy. No? I didn't think so. I can't believe the finish on these senior citizens. And those stocks! I would have to wear white cotton gloves to feel comfortable handling that beautiful piece or artwork! I am also glad that you took it out and decided that it needed a few photos. Thanks, DLB

Chuck:

There is something to be said for the polish and the lighting, but all of my early .44 Mags have just a slight difference in the "color" or bluing, or more correctly a difference in the way light reflects from the barrel and cylinder than it reflects from the frame. This is rarely the case on my 357's. My thought, probably influenced strongly by what some expert said here on this forum, is that the hardened barrels and cylinders of the 44 Mags took the bluing just a bit differently than the less hardened frames, thus creating a very mild "pinto" effect when photographed in the right light.

Do you see the same in your early 44 Mags?

Every time I think I've seen the most beautiful revolver somebody comes up with a set of pictures like this. The bluing looks five miles deep! What a beautiful set of pictures with a gorgeous subject.

I'm jealous beyond belief.

Richard, the only one I have is a 5" example that has a different color tint on the side plate that is almost purple. I do believe though that there is something to the theory that the hardened frames, cylinders and barrels on the early 44 Magnums could and did take bluing differently at times. I'll have to dig around and see if I can find some more examples and if I do I'll post them in this thread.

Chuck:

There is a similar difference on this 5-screw - most noticeable on the barrel in this photo...

That pinto effect is very interesting. I've looked at those pictures several times and not commented in the thread, basically because I have nothing new to add. Like everyone else, I think that revolver is simply magnificent! The one with the ivory stocks is drool worthy as well.
