Default Date of manufacture of Chiefs Special Airweight/Home-1956 CS Airweight & box

I just bought a Chiefs Special Airweight with the original Sun Ray box for under $500. The gun and box are in excellent condition, but not mint. The Airweight frame has very little high edge wear and no large wear spots or rust on the steel parts. The box has some wear on the edges but no tears and minimal fading. Original wrapping paper is enclosed, but no cleaning brush or flyer.

The serial number is in the low 82,000 range. Can one of the SWCA members kindly tell me what year it was made?

I am going to guess around '54-'55 but I am not that well versed on mfg. dates.

Thanks in advance,
Mike

The info I have is a little sketchy, but I believe the low 82,000 range would put the ship date sometime in 1956. I'm sure a more expert opinion will be along here soon.

Thanks for your reply.
I'm hoping one of the experts can give me an approximate manufacturing date, not the shipping date.

Thumbs up

Hopefully they can, there are some real experts here...but I believe the only way to be certain of the manufacture date is to send a letter requesting same to Mr. Jinks. The pros here may be able to narrow it down considerably though.

DA, I wasn't aware we could get the mfg. date from Mr. Jinks. The 3 or 4 S&W letters I have only mentioned the shipping date. Even the excellent book SCSW only lists serial numbers in terms of eras of production, as in Mod X was made from 1974-1989 and the serial numbers are from #0-#0000000.

Colt letters also have only the shipping date unless you specifically ask for the mfg. date. Then they will provide both. But the serial numbers of Colt models by year of mfg. are found in Colt collecting books and on the internet.

Usually I am more interested in the year the gun was made rather than it was shipped to some generic jobber, distributor, or retail store in the heartland.

The exceptions can be police, military, or very rare models, of course. Shipping location can be key for such collectables.
I do have two snubbys where the shipping date and location were very important, though. They are both rare and collectable. So in an historical context, the location and who they were shipped to, was crucial.

Thanks again for your reply. An estimated shipping date from the mid 50s is helpful.

You may be 100% correct about the info Mr. Jinks provides. I've never sent him a letter personally. I was under the impression he could provide the build date, or a very close approximation of it, but maybe it's only the shipping date that's available. I own 40+ old S&W revolvers (all but 2 of them snubbies...I know, I know ), and "approximate" has always been good enough for me. Even with all those guns, I'm really not much of an 'expert' .

I just got some additional information from the seller. The serial number is on the bottom of the box in white grease pencil, and the box does have the original cleaning rod and swab, along with the flyer and the shipping paper. The end label is printed Chiefs Special Airweight. So I have a nice complete gun and box coming.

S&W kept records of shipping dates, not manufacturing dates.

That is my understanding. I think some of the advanced collectors have access to mfg. dates or have been collecting serial number data for a long time.
If so, hopefully they will reply to my thread.

SCSW is not much help in that range. If you're lucky, someone might have one of close SN with verified date to get you in the ball park. Happy hunting.

My carry Airweight is usually a 1962 (or so) Mod 37 with a great action job. Other than that, it it stock. I bought it nearly new from a friend. When I'm not carrying that one in cargo shorts in the summer, I'm carrying a 1955 Agent with a factory hammer shroud. The Mod 37 is showing some slight wear, but the Agent is well used. It has a lot of character. I carry both in Kramer horsehide pocket holsters. They are my favorite.

Well, thank you very much for contacting Mr. Jinks for me. It's appreciated. I have talked with him a few times on the phone. Also at the last NRA show in Pittsburgh. He's a nice gentleman.
Thanks also to DAinTX. Who also nailed it.
The approximate ship date will have to do!

I was off by a year or two.

Here's 4 lousy pictures from the dealer. The lady at the store assured me the gun is like new. I see one blotch on the right side of the frame behind the cylinder and just above and behind the trigger guard. It could be residue, oil, a blotch, or just lousy pictures. The box is only good condition, but they are quite perishable as we know, and it matches the gun and has the complete contents.

I bid on the auction but it closed with my high bid under the reserve. I contacted the shop and they told me it was a consignment gun. That's the reason it didn't have an inspection period. I had the sales lady go over it with a fine tooth comb, including looking for the insidious 6'Clock frame crack under the barrel, using a magnifier and a flashlight. It's not there. It's not marked MOD-37 either. According to Roy, another calendar year and it would have been a Mod 37, not a Chief's Special Airweight. I got if for far less than the hidden reserve. The seller didn't want to continue to re-list it and my offer under $500 was acceptable.

The only thing is the dealer insisted on sending it 2 day air delivery instead of USPS Priority Mail. So I'm paying $38 for insured shipping instead of roughly $23-$26 for Priority Mail.
I suggested the sales lady who helped me check the ATF website to verify that class 1 FFLS can ship handguns inter-state via the US Postal Service. Not only did she check the website, she called the local ATFE office to verify it. Smart lady, but her boss, the dealer, is slightly crooked. Perhaps cheap is a better word. He didn't want to hear about it, either from her or me. I decided I wouldn't let $13-15 stand in the way of a very good deal on a mid 50s Airweight in A condition with the matching box.

I used my CC, so if there is anything really amiss with the gun I can have the payment reversed.

In defense of the gun dealer, they can probably ship right from their shop via FedEx or UPS pickup. to ship via USPS they probably have to take the package down to the post office, and maybe argue with an unknowledgable postal clerk about "yes it is legal to ship this handgun". So USPS would be cheaper for you but probably cost them more-- after all, time is money. Is an extra $15 really something to quibble over, esp when the purchase of a beautiful airweight Chief is involved?

The owner drove to drop the gun off with some other firearms at a UPS hub, according to the sales lady. It was not picked up at the store.
On the plus side, there was no up-charge for the CC usage, which at least cancelled out the higher shipping.

I agree with you, as I posted, the difference in shipping was not enough to make me decide to decline the sale. I got the gun and box for a very nice price under $500 due to the consignment owner's decision not to bother relisting the gun. I feel if he had some patience to relist he would have got his hidden reserve price of $600 but probably no more than that.

If I could ship 2nd day for $38, I would in a heartbeat. However, I've not seen prices under $60 and usually up around $90 to ship UPS or FedEx. It's so high that, if I ship any of my C&R guns, they'll go FFL to FFL. I shipped a M34-1 yesterday to another forum member and it cost me $35 via USPS ($20 FFL fee and the rest postage/insurance).

I picked up the Chiefs Special Airweight today.

The box may be only in good to very good condition, but the revolver is stone new. Not one bit of high edge wear of the cylinder, frame, or grip frame areas. The cylinder had hardly been opened and closed when you look at the inside of the left recoil shield. The barrel, cylinder charging holes and front cylinder face look new, as does the diamond checkering of the stocks.

I really lucked out with this one. Since I regularly carry a 1962 Mod 37 I probably won't shoot this one. I bought it as a collectable and an investment.

It is missing the S&W broadside, "The Chiefs Special Airweight" I am sure I can get one without too much difficulty.

Both the gun and the matching box are much better looking than in the seller's pictures.

I can't promise to post pictures soon. I am way behind taking pictures of other guns I collect, like Colt snubbys, German Walther PPKs, original AR-10 rifles, and some AKs I built.

I will try to take some of this excellent example. I just don't want to promise to post them soon.

I bought a super nice airweight Chief myself a while back, it was a 1973-ish 2" model 37 with box & etc, which looked lke it'd never been carried & not fired much if at all. I'm not really a "collector", and it was so nice that it would have been a shame to bob the hammer & smooth off the trigger blade which is what I like on a carry gun..... so I sold it. Oh well, part of the fun in ownership is the hunt and acquisition, so at least I got to enjoy that, and made a little money on it to boot.
I'm still on the lookout for a shooter-grade 37 to go with my 36 & 60 EDC's.
