question of value of 2 old smiths
Would anyone have an idea of the value of these.
At this time I don't have pictures and I know that doesn't help.
The first one is a 38 m&p 2nd model of 1902 marked 38 S&W
SPECIAL U.S. SERVICE CTG'S in 2 lines. It is blued finish with adj rear target sights and patridge front sight. This gun letters to E.E. Patridge. It is in 80% or better condition. How much does the Patridge name add to the value?
The 2nd gun is a second model 22 single shot with an 8 inch barrel. The barrel has been lined and the right grip has a piece broken and missing. It is about 1" long and 3/16"wide near the top of the back strap. This gun is about 50% other then these 2 problems.
Any ideas on these 2 would be appreciated.
Thanks Bob

Just spit my coffee over the keyboard...
Sounds like minimal value on the Single Shot. The Patridge gun may be a significant piece. Pics of that one definitely needed. Sight unseen its a four figure gun.

I would agree with Pace. If the .38 M&P letters as shipped with Patridge target sights , it's easily a 4 figure gun, and maybe close to that if it was shipped as a service sighted gun & Patridge converted it to a target gun with his sights. Maybe Mike Priwer can chime in on this, as the gun is right up his alley of expertise. Ed.

I agree about the model 1891 having miminal value UNLESS you look closely at the barrel and see a stamp "H M POPE." He did on occassion reline single shots with his type of rifling.

I missed this thread yesterday - was going back and forth to Seattle.
As to the 1902 - I have some questions.
What is the first part of the serial number ? You can use X's for the last two or three
digits.
What is the barrel length, measuring from the front face of the cylinder to the end
of the muzzle ? Does the letter specify the barrel length ?
How does the letter describe the gun ? Ie, as a .38 M&P target, or shipped with
adjustable rear sight, etc ?
Patridge was a well-known, and capable, shooter. So the name adds value to the gun.
It depends on how the gun was originally shipped, and the barrel length. It also depends
on whether the gun was used by Patridge in any of the shooting competitions. If it was
just a gun the factory gave him, and he never used it, then that is a consideration.

I"m back. We are having some possible flooding problems coming down stream to my cabin and I have been up there moving what I can up.
I"ll try to get more information and if I can photos of these 2 guns as soon as I can.
I saw in Neal and Jinks book that some of the second model single shots had first model barrels and some 32 and 38 barrels were sleeved to 22. How can I tell if this is the case on this one?
