The S&W Letter on my Model 1917 Arrived
Yesterday a large envelope from S&W arrived in my mail box containing information on my excellent-condition S&W commercial Model 1917. After some interesting general history on this revolver, I found out that it was shipped in May 1941, from S&W to the Schlatter Hardware Company, in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. I did some research on this outfit, but all I could find was a 1968 era photo of the building and saw a copy of a catalog from the 1940's for sale. The company sold all kinds of items for the business and home, plus firearms. If anyone knows more about this outfit, I would be interested in your response. It sure would be fantastic to find out where this Model 1917 went from there as it is in such good condition.

I have an insatiable lust for Pre-War Magnas, if commercial 1917s exist with them, well, then I have something else to add to my "list".

As I recall without looking, the 1941 catalog shows ALL N frames wearing magnas as standard.

I'm on the job, so to speak and don't have the letter with me, but as I recall it specifically said that my Model 1917 was shipped with a 5.5" barrel, blue finish, Magna grips and a lanyard ring. I can take a photo of the 2nd page of the letter if need be tomorrow evening.

Bill & Jim,
Two primo 1917s!
I'd be interested to know if either of your 1917s have the prewar hammer block? It can be seen entering the hammer slot from the right side at the same height as the firing pin hole.
I suspect Jim, yours does not but Bill, I think yours may have it.
thank you,

Well Jim (BMG60) and all, a couple of items. First off I'm disturbed to find that my S&W letter has the wrong serial number. It has 208101 and my revolver has 207101, which is also stamped into the inside of the right grip panel. Jim (Hondo44) my Model 1917 does not have the prewar hammer block. I compared it to the innards of my .38-44 HD from 1934 and they look identical. If anyone can put me in toch with Mr. Jinks I'd like to get this problem resolved. I suspect the incorrect serial number was a typo and the history is the same, but I won't know until this is checked out.
