I have a 1956 smith and wesson 38/44 it has some finish wear, almost gone along the backstrap and has some reddish brown patina, nicks and scratches and I would like to get it refinished some day and just generally gone over.

Will the factory still accept it or im I SOL because of how old it is?

It shoots accurately and lockup and timing are good but I want it to look nice again, dont plan on selling it either.

The factory will not refinish a gun that is out of production, simply because there are no repair parts for an older gun at the factory. Usually a refinish does not add collecting value to a gun, but could diminish its value for some. Having said that, I had a 38/44 refinished at Fords in Florida. I love it! They do a great job. Ok thanks, did they go over the gun as well or just blast and reblue? Thats one thing i thought S&W would be able to do.


and I dont care about value, its a shooter to me and something to pass on.

also what are the best ones, is ford the most trusted for s&w or are their other companies that offer it as well? just seeing whats out there

Fords is one of the best and does a great job on S&Ws. They have done several 1894 Winchesters for me and all have been properly processed and not "over buffed". I like their high polish finish, they do take care to retain the lettering and contures as much as possible. They have also changed out barrels and done other work prior to finishing. Call and talk to Larna and discuss your project. Other forum members may have local gunsmiths that they prefer.
