Default Please help me identify my pistol

I have a S&W model 26-2, the serial number is N44-- on the barrel is stamped 1955 model, it is chambered for 45 acp, it has a swing out cylinder and is hand eject, the grip is a full wood grip that covers the base of the grip on the gun so do not know if the serial number is stamped there but it is stamped above the 26-2 model number when you swing the cylinder out. When I got this pistol from a neighbor, he told me that he got this from his father and that when he was in Vietnam, that he had his mother ship this to him and carried it while he was over there. The only reason that he got rid of it was because he has a bad wrist and can no longer shoot it and wanted someone to have it that was going to shoot it. It now has a accu dot scope type sight. If anyone can give me anymore info on this pistol it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Welcome to the Forum.

If your revolver has a heavy barrel and is stamped "Model of 1955", it is probably stamped 25-2, not 26-2. It may be hard to read.

This model was designed for those target shooters that prefered revolvers over semi-autos.

If additional holes have been drilled in the topstrap for the dot sight, that would reduce the collectors value. However, these are great shooters.

Do a search for "1955 revolver". There will be lots of posts to read.

I have looked very closely and the model definitely reads 26-2 not 25-2

If I remember correctly, I paid $500 for it when I bought it but I have no intention of selling it, but it would be nice to know if I paid too much or not. I have not removed the accu dot sight to see if there has been holes drilled or not. I do not like scopes on pistols and have always removed any that have been on any that I have purchased, but I kind of like this type of sight for older eyes

It is not uncommon for S&W to mismark the model number.

$500 is a good price for a 1955. If there are no additional holes in the topstrap, and the finish is in really good shape, $500 would be a GREAT price.
