Possible .44 Hand Ejector 3rd model Target?
A LGS recently came into position of a S&W 6.5 .44 Hand Ejector with serial number 320xx. I believe it's a 3rd model based off the serial number, but I'm not 100% certain. The LGS is selling this for a pretty penny, so I'm trying to do as much research as I can and trying to find if it's worth the price of the revolver.
Thanks for everyone's help.
P.S. Sorry for not having more pics, but will post when I go back to the LGS next week.

It is a 2nd model target as the ejector rod is exposed. On a 3rd model the ejector rod is protected by a "shroud". It looks to be a nice gun. A 2nd model target won't bring near the money a 3rd model target will, but nice 2nd model targets don't come along all that often and in good condition can be worth a pretty penny too.

Chad, thanks for the insight. I think the LGS thinks it's a 3rd model, so it's priced as such. I'm guessing a 2nd model is priced around 2k?

Welcome to the Forum.
2nd and 3rd models were built together up to about 1940.
That 2nd model looks nice.

What's a fair price on a 2nd model?

If it was a 3rd model, they wanted 5k for it.

I think most would advise you to familiarize yourself with pricing at the auction sites
such as Gun Broker and others and see what actually sells, differing from sellers
optimistic pricing.
I sense this shop is highly over priced.
Like all areas of collecting, it takes a while to get a real feel for value, and we have all
jumped when we should have watched and waited.
Good Luck
John

If the gun is as good as it looks in the picture and the only issue is the little bit of muzzle wear I can see, I wouldn't be surprised if it brought 3K or more.

If it was a 3rd model it would be a steal at 5K.

We all have watched and waited when we should have jumped, too. I also believe this one is overpriced, by a factor of two maybe. It does look very nice in the picture but there isn't enough there to tell if it's all original or nicely refinished.

I'll take more photos and let everyone see what they think. It's price at 5k because it's mislabeled, but I'll see what the price is when it's labeled correctly.
It's pretty clean in person and the LGS owner is pretty honest, hopefully.

I did check gunbroker, but there isn't much to compare it to since auctions on a .44 2nd target or 3rd target is scarce. The owner of the LGS went by the price guide to price the revolver.

I did see a 99% pre war target .44 sell for $2500 locally not too long ago, if that helps any.

I've seen 2 sell, both were in the 2-2.5 range.

I would never have believed 2nd model targets are now worth this much.
It's great if a feller owns some, horrible if he wants to procure them.

That looks very, very nice indeed.
It's impossible to tell from the photos, but is there a possibility that it may have been refinished? It just seems too high gloss for it's vintage...but it just could be the lighting.

Doesn't look to be refinished. By the pics there looks to be a lot of wear on the front half of the barrel. Maybe glare though.

Here is a picture of a 99% 2nd model Target I used to own and the finish was as high gloss as any prewar gun I have owned. It sold for over 4K several years ago.

It's not refinished from what they told me. The front has some wear but not as bad as the picture shows, my brother took a ****** picture.

That is nice. Hopefully they won't price it over 2k or 2.5k, but will see when I go back on Friday.
