Default HE second chrome-plated in 44

Here is my 5 inch HE second model in 44. It's been chrome plated-long ago. Serial number 153xx places it early in manufacture. Other markings are a diamond and a star/asterix. I haven't shot it yet- will try some Magtech 240 grain I think. These grips came with the gun.Very tight lockup, but trigger pull is heavy.

Reverend, in a solid old 44 Special Smith try some hand loads of 6 to 6.5 grains of Unique with a 215 to a 240 grain cast bullet and standard large pistol primers. They perform nicely in my old 44's. I am very gentle with my old Triplelock using 6 grains of Unique with a 200 grain cast bullet. You will enjoy these pieces of history!!

I think it is an old nickel refinish; chrome plating looks more bluish. Any idea why the trigger is so heavy (dried gunk in the internals)?. Nice old shooter.

Looks to me like it's ready for a trip to a local Bar-B-Que! How's about a fancy holster for it as well? It should be a great shooter with light loads such as those suggested by the previous posters. Well, found Reverendgary!

Dribble some light oil down the hammer opening, work the action. If you're a little braver take the side plate off and see how the workings look. It may just need a good cleaning out to improve the trigger.

Thanks for the responses and tips. I'll try the oil on the hammer. And the reloads once I save some brass and get some reloading equipment! Great balancing gun. Now looking for one in more original condition. I have 390 in it from 11 months ago.

The true collectors may disagree, but I think you did quite well. That's a good price for what should a great shooter.

Good looking gun and you got a great deal! I can't afford the 99% mint guns so I buy worn examples, to me they show service and did a job, those mint guns never worked a day in their sheltered lives!

Thumbs up

Chrome or nickel?

Either way , since the damage/improvement has been done , I'd swap those grips for a nice set of faux ivory , or maybe even ebony. It would make a dandy BBQ or church picnic gun!
