Just picked this up....
Pre Model-10, 5" barrel, half-moon front sight, 5-screw sideplate, hammer has upswept spur. Serial number is C45343. Best I can pin manufacture date down to is between 1948 and 1952. Can anyone do any better?

I'd say shipping in early 1949. I know of one in the low C90,000 range that shipped in late 1949.

Yours would have the new "High Speed" hammer and short action which more or less started with the C-series. It is legitimately a pre-Model 10. At about C400000 (1957) the model numbering system began.

The quintessential Smith revolver! Congrats on acquiring yours. Here's one from 1947.

Nice M&P, I just picked up an S serial number, post-war, transition model in about the same shape as your gun. I'm no expert, but FYI, I don't believe the grips are original factory equipment.

Grips are definitely much newer than the revolver. Note that there are no diamonds around the screw holes. Diamonds stopped in the late 1960s, so grips are no older than that.

Considering they fit pretty poorly (and have no diamond), you are most likely correct. The score line visible through the S&W logo is repeated on the other side leading me to believe this one worn some kind of target-style grips at some time in the past. Next step is to look for appropriate "diamond" grips for the old girl.
