Default 38/44 Outdoorsman

Hi S&W forum,
I recently acquired this very nice 38/44 Outdoorsman, SN 146XXX, which the book says 1955-56.
Is it proper to call this a 38/44 Heavy Duty Outdoorsman, or just 38/44 Outdoorsman?
Greg

Heavy Duty = fixed sights
Outdoorsman = Target sights

Heavy Duty Outdoorsman not correct nomenclature.

Nice 38/44 Outdoorsman you have there.

S&W also had another Outdoorsman - the pre-WWII K-.22 Outdoorsman .22 target revolver.

You mean like this one? Not in as good condition as the 38/44, and a mediocre picture to boot. SN 6777xx.

Also, thank you all for the kind comments.

Very nice one, Greg. I'm not used to seeing the high polish blue on post war guns. I think yours might be just a little bit uncommon in that regard. I seem to recall that finish was a special order option at the time.

It's funny how things are today. No one is this day and time would consider a .38 Special (High Velocity or +p) a true outdoorsman's side arm. Most would consider the .357 Magnum as a minimal sidearm for the woods/wilderness carry, with a .44 Magnum or better, being the norm. Some knowledgeable persons would consider and still carry .38 Special, but not many.

And time marches on.......

PS....That's a really nice revolver there. Can I make a bid?

Thanks for comment LPete,
I agree about the .357, that's what I have carried in the woods. I walked by this gun at least 3 times last Saturday at the Fond du Lac, wis gun show before I picked it up. I figured I already have a couple N frames that shoot .357 and .38. Well, I picked it up and the rest is history. It is about the nicest S&W that I have, tightest lockup, and shoots great.
As far as bidding on this one, let me enjoy it for while.
Greg

Yep, I have a pre-war Outdoorsman. It is without doubt the smoothest, most accurate revolver I own, and I own a lot of them.

Oh well, I guess I had to try.....

That's a nice one for sure.
As stated previously, the OD has adjustable sights
while the HD has fixed sights.
But it's your gun so you can call it whatever you wish.
Just don't name the darn thing.
Names are for people and pets.
Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine. Mini-rant off......

I agree. Many years ago, when we first started breeding and raising polled Herefords, my wife tried to name the first cow we bought. I said, "No, her ear tag is the identification for her." Deb didn't care for that and continued to call the cow "Lady."
So, I went out and bought her a bred heifer Jersey that she could milk every day. I said, "Feel free to name this one, she'll be a pet in no time." And she was. Her name was Nutmeg, or Meg for short. Wonderful animal, gave us nearly 6 gallons of rich milk per day and several calves in the years we owned her. But that move put a stop to the nonsense of naming every Hereford heifer I bought after that. Mission accomplished.
