Smile The Ultimate Sanderson Stock Appreciation Thread (Post Your Stocks!!!!)

A few months ago I started focusing on custom stocks; primarily Roper and Sanderson, this thread has to do with the later of the two which I have found (6) nice examples.

I found my first set of Sanderson stocks in a classified ad right here on the forum; they are thumbrest target panels for a 1911. They have the number 17 stamped into the back of each panel;

The second set of Sandersons (K frame, Square Butt) again came from right here on the forum, a great result from placing an ad in the WTB Section. They have the number 63 stamped into the back of each panel;

My third set, for a Colt Officers Model, were a gracious gift from a forum member . They have the number 1 penciled into the back of each panel.

The fourth set was recently found on Ebay in a "lot" with some junk grips. They fit the J frame Round Butt and have the number 1 stamped in the back side of each panel;

The 5th and 6th sets of Sandersons just arrived in my mailbox today; the result of a successful trade with another great forum member! They are both for the K Frame, Square Butt. One is a gorgeous pair of standard thumbrest targets with the number 81 stamped inside each panel and the other is a set of wrap around thumbrest targets with a right hand palm swell and no numbers stamped inside; this is a large set of grips with extra wood extending below the grip frame.

1st Set

2nd Set

That's all I have for now but hopefully there are more to come! PLEASE SHOW OFF YOUR SANDERSON STOCKS!!!

S&W M-52. The palm swell doesn't show well and the color is a little too red.

A little better...... Yep, that's a chip.

I was fortunate enough to find (2) more pairs of Sanderson K Frame Target Stocks! These are "twins", they appear to be exactly the same in style and dimensions and each have enclosed backstraps and strain screw relief. One set has the number "4" stamped on each panel and one set has the number "5" stamped on each panel. The stocks came on a K-38 and K-22 that I presume were owned by the same person as both guns were set-up the same.

I would imagine the stocks were ordered and made at the same time which makes me wonder what exactly the #'s mean on the back;

- Were each individual style/model of stock made by Sanderson numbered starting at 1 and ending at XXX??

- Was the number a code for the size of the grip area? i.e. palmswell, finger grooves, other specific proportions.

I'd like to be enlightened on anyones thoughts on the numbering scheme of these Stocks

I'm relatively sure the numbers are simply to easily identfy the pairs.
A triple lock target.

I found the N frame grips at a little gunshow right here in town, labeled "Herrett, K-Target", didn't look very closely at them, traded I don't remember what. I got them home and found the numbers inside; they weren't Herrett and they didn't fit a K frame, Darn!
Really didn't have anything appropriate to put them on until I got the T-lock almost a year later, and the "special order" swivel has to come off to do that.
Have another pair of fancy wood K Sanderson grips but haven't photographed them as yet...

I traded the M-52 grips on a set for a Colt I frame. They don't have the stamped pairing numbers.

I added another set of K Sandersons today. They are in excellent shape with the number "70" on the inside of both panels.

I now have (4) sets of the standard thumbrest target stocks but they are not all exactly the same;

(2) have enclosed backstraps and strain screw relief cuts.

(1) has an enclosed backstrap and no strain screw relief cut.

(1) has a partially exposed backstrap and no strain screw relief cut.

Here is my most recent Sanderson pick up. Sorry, I know they aren't on a Smith, but they've breathed new life into this old cut down Colt. I think I've fallen for the old girl all over again.

A couple more sets of Sandersons I have picked up as of late........

My first set of N Frame and the first set where the checkering does not wrap around the back of the grip. They have NO numbers on the inside of the panels. Large RH palmswell, fully enclosed backstrap, and strain screw relief. These came to me from forum member samandglove1. Thanks Ash!

My first set of Left Hand K Frame Targets. This set has no strain screw relief but does have a partially exposed backstrap. the number 78 is stamped into the back of each panel. This set came to me from forum member grips13. Thanks Tom!

I am a big fan of sanderson grips myself. I have found that they kinda look alike but actually vary more than one might think. I'm still learning to take good pictures so i hope these come out ok.

Next are a colt pair i found at the last gun show. The grain is real nice.They were priced where i could not resist.

My latest set of fine old stocks arrived today. The question in my mind is; did they come without the thumb rest, or are they modified?

I don't much care either way, they feel wonderful in the hand, but it is a question that has me a bit curious. What do you guys think?

Here they are on my 19 no dash:

Not certain where they will live permanently, I rather like them on this gun, they may stay here.

Modified I'd say, but done well enough. A very nice looking set of grips.

I've picked up a couple of sets of grips recently for Colt DA's that might be Sanderson but I'm not certain. One oddball set for sure with a pinky cut that I believe to be original to the grips. The second pic is a better representative of the color.

Those are Sandersons and I think the pinky relief is original too. there was a beat up set that sold ebay awhile back and it had them too.

Another set of Sandersons just came my way.

I do like the, but I think they were made for someone with smaller hands. The left handed ropers I also have for the match target here is just all around better for me, except of course that I'm not a southpaw.

I would be remiss in my efforts to compile this large grouping of Sanderson stocks if I didn't add these two recently acquired sets; I know they have been posted in a separate thread already so my apologies for the redundancy but I think they belong here as well.

This thread has really has really benefited from other members additions, please keep them coming as you find the time. Also, as you acquire them feel free to post them up!

1) K Frame, Square Butt, #88 stamped into the panels. These are the coolest set of Sandersons I have found to date.

2) Sanderson 1911 Thumbrest panels, #42 stamped on the back of each panel.

Ended up with a set of pretty amazing sandersons, that I will never be able to use.

They were marked for a Model 52. How many left handed thumb rest Model 52 sandersons do you guys expect exist?

Lovely stocks, I must say.

Hi Folks,

I found a nice set of Sandersons attached to a nice K-38 that dates to 1952. These are beautiful stocks. They have the number 69 stamped on the inside of each panel. Found this rig at a local gun show recently.

What is the going rate for a pair of Sandersons? Say for a K and an N frame.

I've not seen many for sale so my well of knowledge is rather shallow; at present.

I just entered the club and purchased an early pre model 10 with Sanderson grips. The matching number under the grips is #6. Is that an indicator of a earlier pair? Pics in the morning light soon.

Another set of N frame Sandersons surfaced recently. I didn't take a shot of the back sides, I apologize for that. They have the matching stamped numbers on each panel and have "44" penciled on each panel, probably to denote the N frame .44 they were made for. And, since they fit my Pre War Outdoorsman, I'd guess the "44" was a pre war as well!

Here is a set of left hand Sanderson stocks. These are shown off the gun in post #20. They now reside on my K 22. As a shooter with sinister proclivities this is a rare find. My thanks to the OP for making these available.

The only J frame Sandersons to surface here, so far... and shown in the original post.
I purchased then from Kris a few months back but could hardly stand the orange color of the cherry wood. I also have a problem with Sanderson checkering not being pointed up to the borders. But that is the way they are...
My workshop associate Dan Kleber needed to practiced his checkering so I put him to work recutting these with diamonds pointed up to the borders, with no over-runs.
I stained and refinished and mounted on my 32 Kit Gun.
I think they look a whole lot better...

I think maybe they originally went on a K frame and were fitted to this Model 3. I'm going to have to chat with some of the wood wizards on the forum here to have the crude fitting finished I think. This gun deserves that.

I picked up a couple sets of Sandersons recently; another set of N frames with thumbrest and these;

by far some of the best grain I've seen on any that I have owned, and a fairly scarce variety, J frame round butt. I have only seen a few sets of J frame Sandersons. I WISH I could find a set of N or K frames styled like these; it seems most have thumbrest.

410bore, I clicked "LIKE" because there is no button for "LUST." I would absolutely love to have a pair like that on my Model 60-4... not original or "period correct" but wow, would they work great!!! Congrats on a great find.

I picked up a pair of grips last month at a local gun show. Aside from fitting a square butt K-frame, the seller had no other information about them. They don't have numbers stamped inside, nevertheless, I believe they are Sanderson grips. Opinions are welcome.

I could be 180º off, but they sort of remind me of some early Herretts I've seen. The numbers inside the grips (to keep pairs together) have been present in all of the Sanderson grips I have seen.

Definitely Sanderson grips. Not all his grips had numbers inside, I have/had several pair that don't. The checkering is a dead giveaway. Look to the borders, the diamonds are never pointed all the way to the border. That with along with the shape of the grip leaves little doubt in my mind.

Thanks. This is why I asked for opinions. Based on my research, the style, checkering, front strain screw cut-out and so forth are all consistent with other Sanderson grips I have seen. However, as you noted, there are no numbers stamped inside (which, if present, would basically confirm them as Sanderson grips).

So my question now is did every set of Sanderson grips have stamped numbers inside or are there, in fact, some known sets of Sanderson grips in existence without stamped numbers?
