Several weeks ago, I posted some pictures of a 1942 Victory that was totally devoid of finish. It is a shooter with no remarkable service history or stamps. So, I decided to redo the parkerizing myself to restore some metal protection and to make the gun look like it did in the arsenal...at some point

. I have not yet had the hammer and trigger case coloring redone, but I think the repark came out okay. There are some pits and dings that I did not try to remove, as you can see. The finish is new, so there are still lots of sparkles that should disappear over time.

Any way, here she is...Miss Renewed Victory.

Very nice job! Some of these were so rough out of the factory, yours looks nicer than some originals I've seen.

You mentioned no service stamps...so what is that on the left top strap?

You did a great job. That looks really good. Once you get the hammer and trigger done it will complete the look.

I've done Parkerizing on numerous military guns, and it's not that difficult for anyone to do. There are several sources for Parkerizing kits. I do know that Lauer Weaponry sells about everything needed, and it's not that expensive. Lauer also sells the Teflon coatings, also very feasible for doing it yourself, at least for handguns, unless you have an oven large enough to accommodate baking a rifle barrel. I have done Teflon coatings on several .30 Carbines in my wife's kitchen oven, and that's about the largest gun it will take. If you are also considering doing a Teflon coating, you should be aware that the gun really should be Parkerized first for proper adhesion.

I'd suggest than anyone having a military M1911A1 or Victory that has a less-than-beautiful Parkerized finish consider giving them a fresh finish.

Thought the military spec called for some kind of sealant after Parkerizing?

DWalt , I had 2 pistols done with Teflon over Parkerizing. The Parkerizing acts like a primer. They are slick operating that's for sure. Had my Star 30M done , frame & slide in grey , small pieces in black park before the Teflon. I'm thinking about doing my original black poly-coated CZ-82 so done.

The process involves a final treatment of the Parkerized finish with a solution of sodium dichromate as a corrosion inhibitor, followed by oiling. Those steps would not be necessary if the intent is to immediately apply a Teflon coating. I think Lauer sells a post-Parkerizing solution as part of the kit.

I used the American Gun Institute manganese phosphate kit. It comes with a cleaner/degreaser, acid solution and neutralizer. You can make your own solution with a C cell battery, phosphoric acid and a steel wool pad. Instructions on the Internet.

Yeah, after I wrote the post I almost went back and said "except for the US Navy," but didn't. There are some V's stamped on the grip frame, but that's it. The letter that comes with it suggests it went to a civilian assignment, not a military one. It also didn't get the safety hammer block mod.

Anybody know of a reasonable shop for redoing the case colors?

Guy, you can get brand new surplus victory hammers and triggers off flea bay way cheaper than having your old ones re-done.

The Victorys all wore service style grips didn't they? Or were some shipped with the Magna style?

I'd get a different set of grips, but the gun came out great!

So far as I know, no wartime Victories left the factory with Magna grips. Immediately after the war, some SVs did, but they were intended for sale on the civilian market.

The grips shown are Jay Scott magnas I had on hand. The gun came with Jay Scott imitation plastic ivory on wood grips. The appropriate grips should be plain smooth walnut service grips. Also, it should have a lanyard ring. I plan to rectify both issues for originality. But, the magnas sure feel good when shooting. I have some S&Ws with service grips and they aren't very comfortable to shoot with. I also have some K frame rubber grips that I may use for shooting.

Correct grips and lanyard loops show up frequently on eBay.

Yes, thanks. I've been surfing there. But, there are other places to get original military parts. It'll be as original as I can make it after 71 years.

Very nice job. I did the Duracoat to a 10/22 receiver and barrel in my wife's oven. One thing you have to do with these coatings to help them stick is to NOT sand them too smooth. They need to have the final coat of sanding before the Duracoat to be no smoother than 200 grit. The first time I did one it was really smooth, the coating did not stick very well.
