Default Diamond magna grip serial numbers

In general, when did Smith & Wesson stop doing the serial
numbers in pencil and start stamping them on the right grip
panel?

"In general" is a pretty wide area. Diamond Magnas didn't appear until the mid 1930s and stamped numbers on the right grip panel go back long before that. Having said that, any time the stamping machine were down for repair, etc. then penciled numbers were used. Hope that helps. Ed.

Also, replacement grips from the factory were normally not serial numbered, nor were later target grips, although some of those have ink date stamps. I have seen many S&W grip panel sets from the 1920s that seem to have neither stamped nor penciled SNs visible.

Thanks for the replies. Now, if a pre-WWII S&W has a set
of diamond magna grips on it and they are not numbered to
the gun (replacements), does that affect the value of the
gun negatively??

To me, unless the gun is of absolute pristine quality, whether the grips are original or not is a minor value consideration given that their condition matches that of the gun and are period-correct. Others may have differing opinions.

If the grips are pre-war magnas, they would most likely raise the overall value significantly. Reason is that pre-war magnas in the upper condition ranges can (and do) sell for $500+ easily with no gun attached.

On the other hand if they're post-war grips, they probably won't add any value, but shouldn't lower it any.

I'm more of an accumulator than a collector, but to me having the original S/N'd grips enhances the value. Grips without the correct s/n, esp if they had different s/n's stamped on, would be a bit of a deduct. Kind of like having a box, even a period correct box, that wasn't actually THE box- worth something, but isn't really an add in value for that particular gun.
