K22 OD 1st local find
I missed one a year ago and I promised myself not to let it happen again.
A friend of mine knows I love the pre-war HE K frames and he told me that a friend of his was looking to get rid of K22 OD (he's not into S&W revolvers). Well a few conversations and quick trip to the ATM and I was on my way home with this little dandy.
It's a shooter not a safe queen and I think I made a pretty good deal.
K22 OD 1st ser #634890 6" with a call gold bead front (I think).
no box and the grips do not number, but all serial #'s match and the gun is mechanically perfect.
I don't think the sideplate had ever been off, it was filthy inside.
A little #9 and some elbow grease made her come to life.
2 questions for the great minds of the S&W forum
1. Any ideas on what these stocks are? (yes i will send more pics)
2. Does any know where I could find a correct set of service stocks, I would love to find a period correct set for her.

Very nice! The stocks appear to be later Sile (Italian) replacements, and looking on the Accessories for Sale or posting a Wanted to Buy ad for 1930s K frame service stocks would probably find you a set.
PS Please tighten that strain screw! .

I'll take a guess at Herrets. Nice gun, how much smoother is the action after cleaning it? I may have a set of grips, let me look in the basement. Nice gun, did you pay much? Don't see a lot of these for sale around here. Larry

I paid $625,
Please let me know if you come up with a set of stocks as I'd love to have the correct ones for this gun.
Thanks for the help

Thanks Murphydog, Of course, I had just put the main spring back in and had not tightened it yet.
Best,
Jason

Great Gun - one of my favorites.
I too would guess that the stocks are Herrets. As for where to find a correct set of stocks, keep an eye on the classifieds and search ebay daily - there are also more and more stocks popping up on GB. They pop up occasionally and sometimes, they are both affordable and nice. Also - a set of Ropers would look great on that OD - they're a bit harder to find...
Congrats - love the color case on the hammer and trigger and for $650, you got a dandy gun. I have 633948 and 635065 and they shipped in May and June 1931, respectively. Therefore, I would expect that your gun shipped in June of 1931.
All the best.

Richard,
Thanks for the info on the ship date and thanks again for the help on pricing while I was making the trade. I think the Coloring is so good because the lock work on this one had been hermetically sealed in oily sludge since the ship date... I was thinking this was a pretty nice example, but then I re-read the K-22 appreation thread and I realized I should probably sell this one for scrap, haha.. There are some "wicked" nice examples in that post, including yours! How do you get them to breed in the safe ? Barry White's music? White wine? should I take their stocks off?
All the best,
Jason

No guess here, those are definitely Herrett Shooting Stars. Seems like everybody's got a grip box with at least one pair of those in it!

Beautiful. I only wish mine (637xxx July 31) was that nice. You will love the way it shoots. Once you have the elevation adjusted for your ammo, measure the gap between the bottom of the sight and the frame, so you can re adjust it as these one screw sights slip.

As I have several sets , I say those grips are definitely Sile's.
Here's 3 sets of Sile's in J , K and N frame shown with a set of genuine Herrett Shooting Stars (lower left) for comparison. Note the checkering pattern.

I concur with June of '31. I had 634,815 which lettered as being shipped to R.S. Marshall Co. Lynn, OH on June 23 1931.
And,yes, it should have a Call Gold bead. According to my K22 database the Stainless bead doesn't show up until late '31, early '32

Actually the breeding process is quite simple. Here is the process:
1) You put all of the K-22 Outdoorsmans you own in a dark corner of your safe.
2) You you cover them up or put them in the back so that you do NOT see them every time you open your safe (they need their privacy you know).
3) You promptly and "completely" forget about the ones that you have in the safe...
4) You search GB, the SW Forum, LGS, Gun Shows and all other gun acquisition sources on a regular basis (at least once weekly) for any K-22 Outdoorsman available.
5) You bid on or buy any Outdoorsman that catches your fancy. And when your wife asks "don't you have one just like that one?" (now you see how important step 3 is) you honestly and truthfully say "I forgot" followed by a quick and heartfelt "I Love You - Beautiful", followed up in the next day or so by a vase of flowers confirming the sincerity of your love for her.
6) After cleaning, polishing, waxing and photographing, you put any newly acquired K-22 OD in the safe and repeat steps 1-6 above.
This is how you get them to multiply.
BTW: The above process also works for 38/44 Outsdoorsmans (pre and post war), Registered Mags, Models 10, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, 27, 28, 29, 34 (and their pre equivalents), along with models 65, 66, 67... Don't ask me how I know...

I like the look of what I now am convinced (thanks mkk41) are Sile stocks. They are a good place holder until you find a set of pre-war service stocks.
Now the fun begins as you begin your search for the stocks, one of those beautiful red boxes, the tools, the brochure, etc...
Good luck,

As you can guess , I like the Sile's. They fit my hand much better than Magna's or even Herrett's. The feel great on my Model 58 above , even with full power loads.

Very nice score, and at a great price.
634373 shipped June 1931.

Looks like Colt used Siles as a model for their future detective special grips.

I think yer right!
Wouldn't surprise me if Colt got them from Sile.
Sile was the importer of all gun things Italian back in the 70's.

Wow! Learn something new here every day. I would have gone for Herrett's too, but now I know the difference between Sile and Herett's Shooting Stars. Still nice stocks on that very nice K22.
