4" 38/44 Heavy Duty's
I happened to be sorting in the safe today so I grabbed a quick shot of the 4" HD's. Looking at the hammers you can see that I have 3 postwar and 3 pre-war. I used to not like these as much as the 5" guns but recently I have really taken to them.
I find they really pack well and are easy and handy to carry and shoot. I can see the bottom most one being a carry gun in my future.
Got to love those 38/44's!
By the way, how do you refer to several 38/44 Heavy Duty's? Is it "Heavy Duty's" or "Heavy Duties"? I would guess the former.

And I actually shoot most of them. They key is trying to keep them sorted in the safe. I finally made two full shelves for the 5", one full shelf for the 4 and 6.5" and then one full shelf for the OD's.
Before I just had the stuffed in there and not sorted out.

Very nice, to my eye the most pleasing S&W to look at is a 4" N frame, it also balances the best in my hand. Well done, I am officially jealous.

Nice collection.
If you go back to liking the 5" better again, I'd be willing to take that pre war with the HBH off your hands
I've been trying to buy one from Bill, but he's not sharing!

"...Duty's" is possessive. Something belongs to the "Duty". "Duties" would be plural, more than one "Duty".

Peter,
Just so yours don't get lonely…. here's a 4-inch transitional HD from 1946 -
.. and a plain-jane 4-inch HD from 1955 -
I think the HD's have a real art deco feel to their lines. They also have great balance and point very naturally when shooting.

It is hard to find a better looking revolver than a 4 inch HD or a 3 1/2 or 4 inch ".357" Magnum.

Someone post a light lug! I wanna see it.

No 4" transitional HD's for me (yet). I am looking for one to fill in the gap in the collection.
I have a transition 6.5", 2 transitional 5" but no 4" (yet)
No light lug's either (sigh).
And yes, "no nickle". I could maybe put up with a nickle first week gun or maybe a 4" HBH nickle but all in all, I just don't like nickle so I won't buy one. Ok, on second thought, a model marked model 20 in nickle I could deal with.

The front sight is the same on all three known Light Lugs. I hope this helps. Better start saving!

Oh, I am saving. Dreaming a bit, but saving a lot!
I was thinking about taking one of the beater 38/44's I have and that spare barrel you sold me and having someone turn it into a light lug 38/44 and refinish it all. I have yet to come to the step of doing it though. It is hard for me to change any 38/44s.

Congratulations on a beautiful collection of revolvers. A 4-inch pre-war 38/44 is on my short list.

I will have to reshoot this picture soon. I just bought 2 more 4" to add to the collection.
I honestly don't know which I am more excited over. One fills a hole in my collection and one I know will be a great shooter!

Oh, trust me. There are a bunch of 4" post-wars here. For years I liked the 5" and really shunned the 4" and 6.5" but then they started to grow on me. Now I shoot more rounds out of the 4" than the 5" ones even though my 5" outnumber the 4" by about 6 to 1.
Today i would say that the 4" HBH is about the optimal shooter/carry gun.

Pete,
For your pleasure. I know you don't like Nickel, but it does have a HBH and its companion did also.
Another Sandusky 4":
And the one in front is as close as you can get to a NIB 4" Pre War and it happens to have a HBH also.
Enjoy!

Peter: in your original photo, it appears that the bottom left pre-war has a slightly different sight set up. Hard to tell, but it looks like a modified almost patridge with bead, and there seems to be a little something sticking up near the back of the frame as if it is a rear sight other than the standard fixed sight.
Can you clarify?

Doug,
I don't think Pete will mind me answering it. It does have a modified Patridge and there is a sight blade fitted into the frame. Pete has shot it and says it shoots to point of aim very well. check his posts and you will find it. Here is the link:
More shooting with the 38/44's

Bill Thanks for catching Doug up. It is a nice shooter and yes it hits point of aim with the right load.
I will also say your front and center is the grail gun of the 38/44's. What a Beaut!

I agree with Bill. That 4" transition should stay a 38/44. It deserves to be kept "as is".

A transitional gun.
I found it in a pawn shop. It had almost no finish remaining, but no rust either. The barrel had been cut back to 4". I strongly suspect a factory job. It's a S&W perfect cut-down job. The only thing telling it was a cut down is the lettering on the top of the barrel was not centered.
As the barrel was cut, I had no qualms having a local shop give it a fine bead blast and blue.
I have the original wood grips AND a S&W marked grip adapter.

Just caught up with this thread due to a recent post. Hope I ‘m still I time to do a little show & tell here. Below my almost mint 38/44 HD Transition, 4 inch barrel, SN S636xx. It shows just a trace of cylinder drag lines. The prewar style box came to me with the gun but no other contents. While the nomenclature appears correct I do wonder if it is original. Seems it should be a gold box by the time the gun was made! Opinions?
