Price Check (Sanity Check)- RM
Attended a popular Central Florida gun show on Saturday, and was surprised to find a dealer with two tables loaded with vintage S&W revolvers. Mostly K and N-frames, and he was pretty proud of them judging by his prices! He had a very nice 1936 Registered Magnum, Reg. 8xx, with presentation case, S&W letters and registration, and vintage SAT. He didn't want anyone handling the RM, so I didn't get a really up close inspection, but it looked 98%+, blued, 6 or 6-1/2" bbl, 2 sets of stocks. The GS was really crowded so I couldn't read the letters to see if it had belonged to a famous somebody. His "firm" asking price was $8000. I realize that this was a very early RM, but is that what kind of $ these revolvers are bringing? I thought he was crazy, or maybe just didn't want to sell it. This is one of my grail guns, but RMs are apparently out of my league.

If it was all original and truly 98% with all the Documentations, correct grips, box..etc...8,000 grand is a very fair price in my mind..
But it ALL has to check out and all be there...Check out some of the Late Ray Cheely's Reg Mags on David Carrolls website...They are amazing and fetch anywhere from 9-12500 for High condition variants...or at least the ones left are in that range...Some of Ray Cheely's collection already sold and I think they commanded even higher...Ray Cheely had some of the finest Smith & Wesson Reg Mags known to exist...
Good luck in your search...Im searching for a 3.5 Inch Reg Mag or Unregistered Mag...Which I know Will never pop its head for what I can afford..But one can dream...Right

IMO that asking price is in line with the going rate for an original unmolested in a 98% finish. In fact it may even be low. However if it's not the original finish then you can subtract about 60% from the value or even more. If the stocks don't number to the gun that is another subtraction.
Personally I won't fool with the RM's because of the value and because in this price range you really need to have qualified experts doing an appraisal.

RM's did not come with presentation cases,If the gun had the original blue cardboard picture box,The original registration paper, factory letter and the original numbered stocks and a second set of Roper target stocks it would be a deal at 8K if you can believe that. The correct SAT is worth about $1,000 alone.

Seeking sanity in the RM marketplace is a waste of time. The prices vary so widely that very little sense can be made of them. The impressive displays are just polish to coax a few extra bucks out of the unaware. I trust very few peoples guesses of condition. Your 98% gun could easily be my 90%.
What I'd advise anyone who wants one to do is research the market. Go to David Carrolls site and see what he's offering. He's kind of high, but he always has the best guns, too. Then read our classifieds. Page backward over the last year or so. Over time you get an idea of what the guns are selling for. I wouldn't jump at one advertised at $8000 because I know you can stumble on really nice ones for half that.

Two years ago when I asked what mine was worth the majority of responses were $1,500 and less.

I got to handle one at the last gunshow I went to. To me it had what looked like a 60% finish left. I could have brought it home for a mere $3500.00.

The price of RM's is increasing very quickly,If you want one I would get in now because I don't see them getting any cheaper. For $3,500 if the gun was all numbers matching and had some interesting features like a Humpback hammer,King Sights, rare barrel length or a Grip Adapter the price is fair.

I was lucky to find one for a very fair price. I displayed it at the NE Ohio bunch and returned it to the owner after the meeting. A notable collector valued it at 800-1200 more then the asking price at that time. I told the owner it was a fair price but didn't want that much money tied up in one gun. Two months later he reduced it 500 bucks, had to get it now. It's a 8 3/4" gun at abt 95%. Would really like a shorter bbl. and only shot it one time so far. Larry

It's an old story S.P. What you have is an old, worn shooter according to some. If those same people who said it was only worth $1500 owned that same gun it would be a rare collector's item and worth twice that amount.

I may be in the minority here, but I personally think there is nothing sane about spending $8k on a firearm - especially for one that you aren't likely to ever shoot. I'm sure many have, and probably even spent much more, but that doesn't make it sane.

Bill, Bill, Bill,,,, There are those that spoke of us not ever seeing this one again when it sold. They said it would be locked away in a dark climate controlled vault for years. It is wonderful to see such a work of art again. Thank you for sharing!!!

I think much has to do with how bad you want it, and if you can get together the discretionary funds to buy it.
When I first started buying guns (a few years back ), I thought $500.00 was a lot to spend on a gun. Once I bought a few at and around that price, my new "too much to spend" benchmark became $1,000.
After buying a few at $1K, $2K became the magic number.
After spending $2K on a few, it became $3K.
I'm now to the point of wanting an RM. I realize that I'll hit a new benchmark once I buy one. I've found myself selling off a bunch of guns that at the time I bought them, I felt like I was on cloud nine. Now they don't do it for me anymore, and it's on to bigger and better things.
I imagine it's much like being addicted to a drug.

Well, she wasn't $8k, and I wouldn't trade her for a RM either .
Like others have said, collecting has nothing to do with sanity. I certainly don't begrudge others in regards to their hobby expenses, or what they decide to do with their own money. You worked for it, spend it as you see fit. But someday I do hope to pick one of these RM's up cheap from your children/grandchildren/great grandchildren that don't care anything about guns.

Oh, come on, one man's 'sane' is another man's 'boring' I'd rather have a fine piece of craftsmanship in my study than a few more $$$$ in my bank statement. Back in the late 90's I thought about buying an expensive sports car, but decided it was too much. I promptly lost more than the entire cost of the car when the market headed south. Life is short, do what makes you happy!

Richard,
Looks like you have been busy, you have added an extra row and a shiny one. The others can fight over the short barrels but I love the long tubes... More to look at and more reach with the whooping iron when you run out of bullets.
Very nice.

or maybe you'd like to sell one of those box-less ones so you don't have to go through the trouble of finding a box for it
There's a very nice Sig Sauer P210-6 listed for trade here in the classifies in case you'd like to diversify
