Just trying to help. It came from a fellow in Tempe (very nice fellow, friendly, knowledgeable gentleman). Seemed genuinely glad to have me end up with it. The stocks are not numbered at all, it has been shot some, left hand threads on the extractor but it is not numbered, neither is the barrel or cylinder but I suppose that went away with all of them around this time period.

Your 28-1 is extremely RARE! Not only have I never seen one, I've never heard of one. Model 27-1s are rare but I do have a couple. You need to get the gun lettered ASAP to make sure it's for real. Then get ready for lots of PMs.

Congratulations on finding a gun that has been talked about being made in theory only - to this date. Now that we know they actually made one Model 28-1, it follows that they made more than one - encouragement to us all!

Thanks,

Jerry

A great find that has been talked about for years. Similar to the reporting (quite a few years ago now) of a Model 29-1 with a 4-screw frame and an extractor rod with a left hand thread. Just curious, is there an L stamped on the rear surface of the cylinder?

Guys, let him get cleaned up. It's not every day one falls in the outhouse and pulls out the prize. Azmick how many gold coins were in you other hand?

Congrats, this will be a great story to follow. Please keep us updated.

If I hadn't seen the picture, I would have never believed it.

Trade you a 4-screw, non-model marked HP for it

Thumbs up

Quite the find ......of course Allen-frame is going to have to amend the Highway Patrolman thread now. Some of the -2's even have lower serial numbers. Looking forward to hearing more about the gun.

The book says the change was 1960, but it could be that the order for it was given, and no 28's got the dash one changes until '61 or '62 even. One this rare, who knows.

I wouldn't be surprised if you find a mint one somewhere GF.

I couldn't believe my eyes!! I have been around here for quite awhile and no one has seen a 28-1 until now. And a 4 screw frame to boot! You absolutely must get that lettered.

Congratulations. You may have the only one ever made! Well, probably not, but there are not very many, for sure.

Smile It's a Miracle!

Amazing! Congratulations on a truly unique acquisition. I feel privileged to even gaze upon a picture of one. I also live in Tempe. Does your gentleman acquaintance have any more one-of-kind guns that he'd like to sell?

Thanks for all the comments gentlemen. It was an extremely lucky find but, I do not do lottery tickets. My next search will be for Jimmy Buffet's lost salt shaker.
My other S&Ws are rather common, a 4" 1955 HP, a 4" Model 28, a 4" 28-2 and a 6" 28-3 rounding out the HPs with a 4" 25-5 and a 2 1/2" 19-2.

As my dad would have said (God rest his soul), "Oh my!"
I've been looking for a dash one for maybe 30 years! This is the first one I've ever seen. Good going!!! Congrats on finding an extremely rare bird. This encourages me to keep looking.
WOW!

"This one brings me up to only 5"

I think you can probably stop now. You're not going to top that find.

Ditto to all the comments from other good wishers.

Your pictures hint at but don't show barrel length, and you haven't mentioned it that I read. Everyone is so blown away by the Model marking, no one has mentioned the barrel length. Is it 6" or the more common 4"? Inquiring minds (and N-frame fans) want to know, I'm sure.

Dave

I'm glad you wrote that. For many years, the 4" HP was everywhere. I've owned my share of them (and loved them all). The 6" version was not that easy to come by - at least in Oregon and Alaska where I've lived since returning from 'Nam. But now I see the 6" version all the time and rarely see them for sale with a 4" barrel.
What gives?
I wonder what the production ratio really was. Since LE agencies usually wanted 4" barrels, I have to believe they are, indeed, more common, but recent experience simply does not bear this out.

I'm not either of those guys, but the L stamped on the cylinder indicates the threads on the extractor rod were left handed. That is the change that the dash 1 indicates.
On the HP, the dash 2 change came along before very many were made with the LH extractor rod and the change was rolled into the dash 2, along with its redesigned cylinder stop. Hence the rarity of the Model 28-1.
I hope this helps.

I'm confused, as usual. My 3 screw HP has a s/n lower than the 28-1 above (S222986) and has an L stamped on cylinder, but is a 28-2. What gives??
