Default Model 19 4 screw- 1959

I'M looking at a model 19 (pics only for now) from a local (100mile) private seller. seller states 4 screw 1959 mfg. "excellent condition"
He's asking 500. Don't have any more info ATT. The photos I have show minor holster wear and a chip out of the grip by the trigger guard. What do you think for this model? Thanks for your input

Vinny,

If you decide to pass, let me know as I've been looking/wanting a 1959 M19. I've already passed on a couple 1958 and 1960's, just looking for that right serial numbered 1959 4 screw 19.

Thanks

a chip out of the grip by the trigger guard.

I either don't see the chip or you are mistaking how they should actually look.

Go get it Vinny

There is a small nick in the frame at the trigger guard but the Left grip panel looks correct and clean ,
Usually the right grip panel is the one that gets beat up if holster carried but lack of blueing loss at muzzle suggests it probably wasn't.

My guess is it wont letter as leaving the factory with the red ramp because of the shape and lack of wide TT/TH but anything is possible and not a deal breaker unless they were asking top dollar.

IMO any clean P&R 19 at $500 is a buy now,
Nice late 50's diamond targets and 4 screw frame adds a hefty premium .

I would inspect any used firearm thoroughly before purchase,
If there are no major issues (like cracked forcing cone ) and it checks out bring home post pics and enjoy it.

BTW, There is a wealth of Combat Magnum information on
The ultimate Model 19/66 Combat Magnum thread

Ask if the stocks number to the gun, if it has been reblued and if there are S&W refinish or rework marks under the stocks. Of if he will allow the stocks to be taken off for inspection. Check the cylinder for play, front to back and wiggle sideways.

If all is solid, see notes on comment above concerning the forcing cone, and if the stocks are wrong and the gun has been reworked it is still worth the price......

FTF, careful, showing up with $500.00 might or could be an invitation to trouble. Years ago I traded an OU Shotgun to a gent for a pre-64 rifle. He would FTF only in his town on a Sunday afternoon. Hmm. I asked for his name which he gave and he also offered his job and job title info.

I called the USPS and the guy was the Post Master as he said. We met in front of said PO and traded, he was alone, I had an armed burly friend in the front seat. I also had 2 bills of sale made out, one with my info and a blank for the Make, model and SN and one for his.

Asking to see his DL and assuring them you will not add the DL # is quite OK. Refusing to do a Bill of sale may be a red flag. I'm a burly ex LEO kind of guy but taking money to strange places seems to be inviting trouble. Please be careful.

It is still a nice looking M-19, I have one and like it. It appears to be a good buy.

Just to clarify a little go ahead and ask to take the stocks off.
Don't be concerned if the grips don't number to the gun as target stocks
were seldom numbered.

good luck on your purchase

Target stocks would most likely not be numbered in 1959.

I picked up the 19 today and it blew me away! The story goes like this: the gentleman settled his mother's estate and discovered the 19 that his 88yr. old mother had stashed away.
He said it was a surprise to him. He took it to a LGS and they offered him 500 for it. that was 12 years ago. Just now decided to sell it. I just happened to call him after he placed it in a local ad. The only blemish is on the bottom of the trigger guard. the bluing is unbelievable. The grips are black walnut has have no numbers. I showed it to my gunny friend and he is sure it has not been opened or refinished. i wish my photo skills were better.
its a sweetheart... thank you Horace and Dan!

They do look like Rosewood with that dark burgundy color, walnut is usually light brown to dark brown color.

That red ramp is looking more like factory in the new pics, does it have a white outline rear site ?

Either way its a really sweet revolver....drool !

Vinny if you were to take a picture of the insides of the stocks.
It may be easier to define the wood type....that is if you care.
Having rosewood ones would be icing on a very sweet cake already in my opinion.
