Bill, Great gun by my favorite engraver. It's my opinion that he was one of the finest engravers of the 20th century. Is the fish that the bear is carrying, silver inlay?

I like how the cougar's tail on the left side disappears under the engraving line, and the tip of the tail reappears again above the engraving line. Cool stuff!

Is this gun marked Model 29?

One reason why I'm looking forward to cataract surgery soon is to better appreciate the photos that you post.

Bill:

I have been following your posts for years now and I do not recall you ever posting that gun before. Is it a recent addition to your Alvin White collection?

IT IS BREATHTAKING!!!! I love the gun, BUT the stocks are way, way, way over the top...

Thanks for sharing

The gun is awesome and the grips are fantastic too. I guess Mr. White did them too. I have seen grips with ivory inlays, but never gold!!

Chad...the fish in the bear's mouth is inlaid in silver.

Richard...A fairly recent acquisition. I now have a 44 Magnum in each of the major barrel lengths that has been engraved and inlaid by Alvin White in the 1950s.

That ain't even funny! The grip work alone is mind boggling then adding the superlative scroll work and inlay makes it a top specimen of the gun engraver's art, but with the inlaid, multi precious metal game scenes it passes into the fine art realm. What a fantastic artist he was!

I just found out that it really is true that your mouth will drop open in amazement. That's a truly stunning piece of art.

You have to wonder...how can a human do something like that. Where does that talent and vision come from?

Beautiful revolver. Lots of his different talents showing in that piece.

The gold work looks like 18k. It takes on a touch of tarnish (patina!)unlike the more commonly used 24k.

White liked using 18k for the inlays especially as the slight tarnishing would highlight the cuts with shadows naturally as the tarnish built and the piece was handled.

It tarnishes fairly rapidly after a polishing. But it seems to stop at a point. 18k has a very nice distinctive color.
18k (as any alloy) is much more difficult to inlay than 24k. It work hardens quickly on you.
Large figures like that bear can be quite frustrating if you're not prepared for how the metal is going to react to being hammered on when setting them in place.

But it's much more wear resistant to handling along with the difference in color of the alloy and the natural patina it gathers. Raised inlays (overlays) really benefit from it.

Silver, even .99Fine, can turn jet black w/age and nearly disappear on a blued gun at first glance. A careful cleaning reveals the inlays once again.

Platinum keeps it's silver/gray color w/o tarnishing. It's more expensive than 24k gold, and is a very hard alloy to work with when inlaying it. I'd rather do steel in steel inlays than work w/platinum actually.

Look at how fine the critters are done! Look at that cats tail!
Look at those cubs! Wow!
2152hq: thanks for describing the engraving masters method, that's really cool. It does really show contrast, doesn't it. Great. Great stuff.

Wow - as a rule I'm just not into engraving but, ....I've been known to make a few exceptions - this is another. I'm glad that an esteemed collector such as you has become the guardian of this fine work of art.
