Hi Joe,
Jigged bone is usually cow leg bone. They are shaped then 'jigged' or grooved with a chisel like tool to replicate stag. The grooves are generally continuous lines since the random grooves of genuine stag are difficult to copy well. They are then dyed to simulate the dry blood and velvet remnants in the grooves and finally polished. The nicer ones have a flame briefly played over the surface before final polish to provide some amber coloring to the high points and cream color to the background.
I prefer good jigged bone to Elk antler.

This statement has really been something I find I identify more and more with. I'm becoming a serious Jigged Bone addict.
I found this set on Ebay, and since the gun had terrible warped and broken plastic stocks on it when I bought it, I had put a set of what turned out to be too old (but overly nice) original colt walnut. They never quite did the gun justice. This set? Heavy as heck, extremely well made, almost a perfect fit. I couldn't be happier with them really.
Anyone get any fun jigged bone lately?

Wow, Sixgun,
That's a pretty special Colt and not just for the cool grips!
Do you have any provenance on the recipient (for his bravery)?
Or who gunsmithed the gun?

All King work from what I can figure. The sights certainly are. I can't imagine the action and modification for .45ACp would have been someone else.
If Charlie Askins is enough of an authority on the subject, then yes I have provenance: Colt New Service - With Charles Askins History Letter

Well Jim, I'm sure a lot of people do but as near as I can tell very few stock makers are using it anymore. When an old pair crops up they go for premium prices so a lot of us who love the look and feel are stuck with something like Grashorn's elk antler stocks.
I have a set he hand fitted to the back strap and trigger guard of my Colt SAA and they fit and feel better than any original bone stocks I've seen.
You can turn your nose up at them if you like, and more power to you, but the stocks I've gotten from Grashorn are very nice and look good to.
YMMV,
Dave

As I said, just a "preference", can hardly turn my nose up at anything as well crafted as Grasshorn's.

"Like" is such a dispassionate word. I LOVe stag grios on any steel handgun!
Here are a few pics I have handy on this machine. I have a ruger MK II and a mod 66 with stags that need a photo session.

I ordered a set of Patrick Grashorn grips for my old 32/20 HE and they look great and fit excellent plus they are good people to do business with thanks to the folks on the forum for recommending them .

Yeah, I like them as well. .38/44 from 1956 with Grashorn's.
Same gun with Driskill's.
And how about some round butt Grashorn's on a Model 19?

I recently purchased these Sambar stags grips. The outer portions of the grips have never been fitted to a gun, and they have a nice swell in the center of each grip that fills the hand nicely.

Jeff,
Your grips look great!! If you try to fit the outer portions of the grips, I wonder if the antique color goes that deep, or if it would be more white colored as you sanded them down?

Mr. Grashorn does excellent work. My dad's old duty revolver wears them well. Along with a Nelson Ford action job and tightening, it will last me the rest of my life.

Some previous posts have mentioned that one likes them or not, and, in general, one would do well to recall the Roman dictum "De gustibus non disputandum erat," which means "Taste didn't used to be disputed."
Below are some jigged-bone grips which I bought from Wyatt Burp, IIRC, to put on a pre-15 for which I considered them appropriate. However, they fit better on a SB Model 12, on which they were unprecedentedly functional. "Unprecedentedly functional" means that before I put those grips on, with a Tyler, I didn't carry the gun because I didn't like the way the grips fit my hand. Now I do. In fact the gun is in my pocket right now.

Thanks Larry. That's exactly why I haven't tried to fit them. I'm afraid I'll lose that patina and if so it won't come back in my lifetime.

Jeff,
Exactly right. The patina is not thick and it'll polish thru in no time.
However a little tea on a que-tip or a propane flame played VERY QUICKLY over the cleaned surface can effect a match. But of course only after experimenting on the back or on a scrap piece.

I saw a pair of Jigged Bone grips (I Think they are jigged bone) for sale this week on eBay. The seller was selling them as stag. I bookmarked them thinking I might be able to get them for $70-80. Before I could even bid, they went was over my range. Maybe someone here got them. I thought they were pretty nice! Here is the completed auction, what do you think?

I generally use $150 as a cut off point for nice stags and $100 for jigged bone. Occasionally, I run into a bargain. I picked up a set of jigged ivory ( go figure ) for under a hundred last year.

Last time I looked on eBay for S&W stocks all I found was page after page of red colored wood models made in Thailand. Where else can one find old/used S&W stocks?

The Classifieds here on the forum and GunBroker are good places to look.

Smooth Driskill elk magnas for my nightstand model 64
Grashorn elk on my woods carry Highway Patrolman
Driskill elk with original pre war medallions on a Reg Magnum
I've owned a LOT of vintage Sambar Stag; somehow it always gets sold/traded in exchange for fancy wood custom target stocks.......
I do have a few pairs of Smooth Giraffe Bone N frame pre war magna and service stocks with original pre war medallions. Giraffe bone is beautiful and resembles ivory very much. I'll have to get some pics of them

I've got a pair of stags that were apparently made for an I-frame or Baby Chief but never finished. They have no screw or escutcheons and there are a couple of blank brass discs where the medallions should be. The reason I've held off doing a final fitting to one of my little guns is that they don't fill out all the way to the edge of the grip frame in one or two places... not glaring gaps, but still a little shy of full. The good news is that the figure is wonderful and they probably will show nice, especially on my Baby Chief. Oh yeah, I already have a cute little Italian pocket knife with very similar stags to side it, as well as a nice Bianchi holster, so I can at least go to little Barbecues and look like I belong!

I realize this thread is old and it has been given several leases on life over the years. It is full of tidbits that really provide insight and education on the topics of jigged bone and stag grips. So, I am going to give it a boost by adding a couple pictures of vintage (1950's I am guessing) Sambar Stag grips mounted on a 1951 Baby Chiefs Special. They will not take the place of the original numbered stocks, but do look good to change things up a bit....

Recently picked up a nice set for an N frame. Haven't decided what they need to go on yet.

Here is an early nickel Chief's Special (aka Baby Chief) with some well aged Sambar Stag stocks....
Yeah, I know that it is cocked, the 10ga shell wouldn't fit through the trigger guard and hold it up any other way....

Here's the set of Jigged Bone grips acquired from Richard at the Reno Symposium on a Pre War Heavy Duty.

1905 4th and a 32-1. The 32-1 now has a nicer pair of stags but I don't have a current picture of it , maybe I can get one later . The 1905 grips I made probably 40 years ago from a chunk of sambar that my pap had in the shop. I am not good at taking pictures .
