Default Question on .357 Magnum Transitional Postwar

I have a .357 Magnum revolver that from my research seems to be a .357 Magnum Transitional Postwar. Its serial number is S 711XX. Its appearance and serial number seems to be within the Transitional Postwar Range. I would appreciate any help here on the identification. Also an estimated value would be appreciated. I've included a picture of the revolver

Welcome! You have the ID correct. The standard reference indicates there were 142 guns in this configuration (long action, Micrometer rear sight) shipped between 1946 and '49. The experts will be along with more information and a value estimate, but a factory letter for this one seems in order:

Firearm History Request - Smith & Wesson

Do you have the history behind it? Hope this is helpful.

Thanks Alan. I inherited the gun in 1985 from a family friend. I'm not sure where he acquired it, but he did run a gun store in Topeka Kansas in the late 50's. I'm currently trying to identify and document the value and history of the guns in my collection for my children.

Welcome to the forum! That is a heck of an entrance. Most of us would trade our kids for that gun! You interested in any?

The revolver looks correct for a post-war, transitional ".357" except for the stocks that look later than the late 1940s. I suspect they have a number higher than 711XX stamped on the right stock panel.

I checked the stock panels and they do not have any numbers on them.

IIRC.... Most/all of these transitionals was shipped to Kansas City PD.... Sounds like a gun store in Topeka could "easily" run across one! GREAT piece of history there...... The experts will be along. I think this makes #12 we know about?

I just offered my kids for a 44 special earlier today. This kind of puts me in a bind.
