Default N frame diamond targets vs coke bottle targets - which years?

I'm wondering if anyone can settle a question that was posed to me from another forum member.

I have always understood that the CBG replaced the N frame unrelieved target grip type around 1956. Later, around 1964 or so, the CBG was replaced by the diamond target type with the smaller checkering pattern. The other forum member states that he thinks that the CBG was for early 44 mags, and early model 57s, and the diamond relieved target grip was made concurrently, and was supplied as an option for other models. My understanding was that the CBG WAS the N frame target grip type for those years, until it was phased out in favor of the N frame diamond target grips. I have seen models other than 44 mags or early 57s with cokes, but I have yet to see a 1956-1964 or so 357 magnum, 44 spl, 45 acp, which had diamond targets originally.

Coke bottle stocks were standard on the 44 Magnum from 1956-1966 and standard on the 41 Magnum from its introduction in 1964 until 1966 when CBG stocks were phased out in favor of diamond target stocks made of Goncalo alves. Concurrently, with the manufacture of CBG stocks, S&W offered plain or checked stocks of made fancy wood (target or Magna type) and checked stocks made of American walnut (target or Magna type). Usually, if a ".357" Magnum or a 1950 Target 44 or 45 was ordered with target stocks (very few were and that is why you don't see them), the stocks supplied were made of American walnut and they were what collectors call diamond targets. I have a 1950 Target 44 shipped in March 1955 configured this way. Many of the 1950 Target 44 revolvers with a 4-inch barrel were fitted with plain target stocks made of rosewood and a few with Goncalo alves.

How late in production do we see unrelieved diamond targets on the 357's and 44's? When do we see the first relieved diamond targets? How long was the overlap period?

Resurrecting an old thread with a question. Are early 1950's (pre-coke) Unrelieved Checkered Target stocks quite rare? I just received this 1950 Model .44 Target (circa 1953-54) with un-numbered UCT stocks from a well-regarded member of the forum. The gun itself is a thing of beauty and the stocks have wonderful grain, texture, and checkering. They are quite light in color, too. Walnut, correct?

Not sure about "rare" but they don't show up very often. I think the 1950 models (.44 and maybe .45 more so) are the guns unrelieved targets originally shipped with. Are yours numbered to the gun, another gun, or not numbered? Most targets were not numbered but those early non-relieved ones sometimes were. I have a set I bought from another forum member which are numbered and are now gracing one of my pre-26s. Very nice, and the gun looks terrific too, enjoy.

Yes. Those appear to be made of walnut.

Very nice gun with seldom seen stocks in great shape. Good for you!

Yes walnut, maybe not rare but I have a set of N frame non relieved that are numbered which is rather unusual for targets, Ser# put them to 1954-55.

Target stocks without the relieved area on the left stock panel were introduced for N-frames in 1952-1953 and used for 3-4 years or more (I have seen several 1950 45 Target revolvers shipped in 1960 that letter with diamond target stocks...no relieved area). Stocks with serial numbers were most likely intended to be used on early 1955 45 Target revolvers, but S&W realized numbering them was not necessary and individual stocks need not be fitted to a specific frame. Also, as discussed in other threads, some frames originally intended for 1955 45 Targets were used to make 44 Magnums, so if numbered stocks were already made, they were used on other guns.

Some early stocks made for Combat Magnums are also numbered, but this was soon discontinued by S&W. I have two pairs of these, but the numbers do not match the serial number of the Combat Magnum.

I have a pre-25 45ACP target with a set of unrelieved walnut Targets. Not numbered to the gun. Very nice appearance.
