Default Got a call today

Hi-ho fellow members, hope all is well with y'all! Today I received a phone call from a LGS and my friend who works there said an old co worker of mine wanted to sell a S&W revolver and was I interested? Now this LGS employee has come up with some good stuff in the past so what the heck. He put him on the phone and we passed the usual pleasantry's and such and got down to business. He said he had a nickeled .357 Magnum that was not model marked and it was an old one and he would like to sell it. I asked what model it was and he said I don't know, is it an K frame or an N frame, he don't know, is it called a .357 Magnum or a Combat Magnum, he don't know, (nickeled sorta ruled out a Highway Patrolman) does it have a box, no, what barrel length, four and a half inch's I think he answered. Then I asked do you have the gun there, no its at home. Ok now to ask a question he may know, how much are you asking for it? Well he said he saw a book and checked the internet and it was worth $1,250.00 and since it was nickeled the book said value went up twice as much and he wants $2,500.00 for it.

Well at this point I told him at this time I couldn't afford such a fine revolver and thanks for offering it to me. If anyone wants to check this one out I would be happy to get his phone number and provide it!

Since he didn't know anything about the revolver, do you think it is possible he does not have a S&W but rather a Colt Python? That is the only thing I can think of that might indicate a price like that...

A non model marked .357 Magnum with 4 1/2 inch barrel (if measured correctly) would make me wonder if it is an RM. If so, I would think it would be a bargain at $2500. Its at least worth a look to determine exactly what it is.

I would at least have looked at it. Maybe a five inch pre 27 . Not knowing would have me tossing and turning.

I am willing to bet it was a nickel pre model 19 with a 4" barrel that was measured wrong.I would have still looked at it and tried to make an offer(in the $1,500 range)

You got to check it out.........

My RM was marked by a LGS as a............. "S&W, .357 Magnum".........on consignment for $325 !

Could be something..... could be nothing....... you could find that you want "whatever it is" and educated your friend on it's true value!

Nothing to lose..... but a little time and we've all spent a lot of time on hunts!!

Hi there, one of our members wanted a contact number for all this and I stopped by the LGS to get his phone number. While I was there we discussed this one, he did bring in two WWII 1911A1s he wanted to sell. According to the fellow at the LGS they looked like they were home gunsmithed by the early IPSC crowd and were totally ruined as original collectables and could charitably be called shooters, this guy wanted $3000.00 apiece as they were WWII collector guns. Who knows what the S&W in question really is, sometimes the most amazing stuff comes from the weirdest places but I'm glad I did not buy a ticket for this particular train wreck.

You are so lucky. I never have that kind of luck! Wait! There's a guy at my front door selling meat off his pickup truck. Gotta go. I think my luck has just changed!

OK - I contacted the buyer and he sent me pictures yesterday evening.
Visions of a 4.5" nickel RM quickly disappeared when I opened the email

It's a 5" nickel pre 27 that looks to be in pretty good condition. Judging from the serial number it probably shipped sometime around 1953 or 1954. There weren't any good pictures of the stocks so I couldn't tell if they were correct for the gun. I could only tell that they were target stocks (not cokes ) as the picture was of the back of the gun. The seller is very firm on his $2,500.00 asking price so I politely declined.

Back to the hunt!

I wonder where he got the idea to price his pre 27 about twice what it's worth?

I think he was looking at the SCS&W and got his gun confused with the Non Registered Magnums. If you look at the value chart listed after that section, I believe it says that nickel guns are worth double the value listed.

The gun is nice, but not THAT nice.

Lets hear it for all you guys and gals like 1blindref out there! I admire the passion and tenacity of folk like that. I on the other hand do not have the patience and people skills for this sort of thing and have undoubtedly missed out on some great guns as a result. I have bought very few firearms off of individuals over the years preferring instead to buy from brick and mortar shops. I have stumbled over some great revolvers at the local gun shops over the years and count myself lucky at that. I am not a collector but rather an accumulator and shooter that does appreciate the good ones. Anyhoo, keep up the good work folks as I do enjoy seeing your finds here!
