Pre-Model 29 Stocks- Question
Well, I probably missed another opportunity at a gun show yesterday...but I have a question about the stocks. The seller had a Pre-Model 29, 4-screw, ca. 1957 (per the S-prefix s/n), probably 95%+, no box or goodies. I was expecting to see Cokes on the revolver, but the stocks were diamond Targets. The seller told me that those were correct for that model, but he didn't want to remove them so that I could see if they were numbered to the gun. I've looked at some of the threads and the SCSW, but am still not sure about the correct stocks for that gun. Can someone educate me, please.

This one came with the "Coke bottle" stocks, but relatively few of these were numbered to the gun. The regular Target stocks definitely would not be numbered to this gun.

Agree. Seller ignorant or lying. Cokes would be correct. Targets of any variety even when original to the gun are seldom numbered. No idea why they didn't usually number the targets, and no idea why they did in a few cases. Weird.
To me an early 44 Magnum with the stocks you described should be priced $300 less because that's the difference in value between the stocks on it and the ones it should have.
But that's just my opinion.

Hi, the pre 29, 29 ,29-1, and I believe some early 29-2's shipped with cokes. DSCN0439.jpg
DSCN0443.jpg I'm not sure if some shipped with smooth targets.

Explains why he dropped the price so easily
That explains why he was willing to drop his price from $1800 to $1500 without too much haggling (after I questioned him about Cokes). He or a previous owner probably made $300-$400 when they removed and sold the original Cokes. Those diamond Targets were nice and are of course valuable in their own right, but if I'm going to drop that kind of money, I would like the gun to be correct. Thanks, as always, for the education!

Not that I know, but with prices I've been seeing lately, $1,500 does certainly sound in the ballpark.
I'm assuming it is blued. What was the barrel length? That could make a big difference.

What I have learned is most target grips were not numbered because they did not have to fit them to each gun. The others, magna, service, etc. had to be fit to each gun and so had the serial number put on one of them, either punched or written in pencil, which mainly was the early HEers.

I've always wondered about the fitting. Over the years, I have swapped around many pairs of S&W Magna and round-top stocks of different ages on different K frames, and generally have found that the fit to every revolver is very good, to the point I would consider the stocks to be interchangeable without fitting.

It was 6-1/2", blued
Agreed Jack Flash- it was probably a "fair" price for a blued 6-1/2" bbl. pre-model 29, but maybe a 5-screw. I think prices down here are a little lower than up in your part of the country. But if I'm going to pay north of $1500, I'd sure like to have the Cokes on it, and maybe the box too. Maybe I'm a dreamer! Although I'm not necessarily looking for a safe queen/collector's gun...I like to shoot'em.
