Default Baby Chief Question

I have a S&W pre model 36, 5 screw, serrated ramp sight. The SN on butt, grips, and cylinder (non-recessed) is 39538. The number on the yoke is 14577, & right below has the number 14577. There are no refinishing & modification stamps anywhere. I attached some photo's. Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks.

That's a nice one!

Likely shipped late 1st quarter of 1954; #38217 shipped in February 1954. It has the 2nd style flat latch. Earlier than a pre 36 which was the full size Chiefs Spl introduced as the Model of 1953.

The #14577 is a random assembly # used at the factory and of no use.

Much more detail here in this commentary: Simplified Chronology - "Model .38 Chiefs Special" - Smith & Wesson Forum

Excellent condition "Baby Chief". It has 2nd style flat latch but still has the small trigger guard. I just posted a thread on a Nickel one I had lettered. 37744 shipped Oct '53.

Read the link Hondo 44 posted.
