Postwar .38 M&P in box
Well, things just keep getting better!
You have all seen this gun before. It is the one that, through a strange sequence of events, was reunited with its original stocks a year or so ago.
Now, I have been able to obtain a period box in extremely nice condition that matches it in all but the serial number. Based on reasonable extrapolations from data on these guns in my spreadsheet, I believe the box and its original contents left the factory approximately one month later than my revolver.
Not only is the box in excellent condition, it came with the "Helpful Hints" brochure that likewise is in nice condition.
I could not be more pleased! See what you think.
(I apologize for the flash on the frame. It is raining outdoors, so I had to take the photo in my shop. Natural light wasn't working well and my diffuser just doesn't seem to have done the trick.)

Looks great and that box is pristine to go with that gun.

Yes, it is. And they number to the gun. The fact is that in early 1946, when civilian shipments began again in earnest, there were quite a few postwar M&P revolvers that went out the door with prewar style stocks on them. I have accounted for 15 that shipped in March of that year alone, including this one.
If you would like to read the story about this particular revolver, you can go here:
Stocks and gun reunited? Pictures added!

Here is a photo of the inside of those stocks. The serial number is clearly seen and it matches with that of the gun.

I believe it is likely your revolver shipped in January, 1948. I suspect the preferred box would be gold. Although, as you know, S&W had a strict policy against waste, so if there was an appropriate maroon box around, your revolver could have been shipped in it. So my gut tells me that you could go either way and have 50/50 odds of being right.
I've seen a few 2" M&P gold boxes for sale lately. I'll start keeping my eye open for another one and let you know, if you wish.

Jack that is a cool story, and your box is amazing. You have some fine S prefix M&P's. Thanks,

I noticed what I wrote in your quotation, and it didn't seem right. I went back to the database and I have to offer a slight correction. It is more likely your snubby shipped in February, rather than January, 1948. It appears there was a group of at least 25 sequentially numbered 2" M&Ps that shipped during that month.
Sorry for the misstatement.

Jim, I have S960xxx. Roy says Dec 47. Also said most likely a gold box, but maroon a possibility.

That checks from my database, Charlie. By S968xxx we were well into January.
BTW - I'm still waiting for the particulars on your gun. Lots of blanks in the spreadsheet on that line. If you need the questionnaire again, just let me know. Thanks!

I have a notation saying "S960xxx-S970xxx 12/47-2/48 (2")" I'm not sure where it came from, but it's probably correct.

Hi DWalt
I have recorded a very few 5" guns in that range, but the vast majority reported seem to be 2", so that is probably generally correct. So far, I have no records of any 4" or 6" guns within that range.
Thanks.

I can't help myself. Not only does this gun look great in its "new" box, it still shoots well too! Here's a target from a few months ago, shot at 15 yards.
