Default white lettering on older smiths

well i hope this don't get me dinged

but i have noticed some of the old revolvers have white filled lettering and was wondering if this was a practice at some point at smith and Wesson, and if so what was the era of the white lettering

or was this something that was applied after the guns left the factory,

just one of those thing that make me wonder

Kits were available from various aftermarket sources for filling in the lettering on guns. May still be sold through Brownells or others.

Applied after. A little acetone fingernail polish remover will easily clean it off. It also works on the gold letter filling.

My Highway Patrolman had orange filled lettering. While it did make that unique HP lettering on the barrel stand out, I didn't like it at all. Acetone (fingernail polish remover) works well as stated above.

Some apply paint to lettering for the purpose of getting better definition in photographs. I've done it. As stated, if it bothers you, acetone or MEK will remove it. I just leave mine alone.

Some people just use soap to make the rollmarks jump out for photographs. A little hot water on a wash colth takes it right off.

Polishing wax will leave the lettering white if not rubbed out all the way too.

Over the years, I've seen numerous handguns with "colored lettering" 0 not just Smiths. I have see red, gold, white . . . you name it. I guess that the owners must have thought this "customizing" made 'em look "pretty". As far as I'm concerned . . . their wives or girlfriends should have kept their nail polish under lock and key. But then I'm old . . . LOL :-)
