Need help identifying a 32 Long Target Model
Hi, new here to the forum. My father passed down his old S&W 32 Long Hand Ejector Target Model that he used when he was a “Justice of the Peace” during the 50’s in Boone County, West Virginia. He told me he got the pistol from someone that used it for bail money. He mostly kept it in his bedside stand until he passed away several years ago. It has been in my family for over 60 years. I just recently decided to figure out what is was and how old it was. I have been researching it for several months. Here is what I think I have and wanted some help in determining how old it is and how much it might be worth. I think was built around 1915 to 1917, it is I believe an I-frame, 32 Long, 5 screw, 5th change, with a 6” barrel, adjustable rear sites, the bluing is about 50% to 60%, barrel is very clean, cylinder is tight and free-wheeling, everything seems to be in very good working order. The serial is (B-F 230XXX) and all of the parts have the same number stamped on them. I know the grips have been replaced, with I think, the correct ones; other than that the pistol is in great shape for its age. From what I have been reading - this is a rare find and might be worth something.

Welcome! I think you have the ID and time frame correct. Your photos don't show the back of the grip frame clearly; if it has a notch in it (called a rebated backstrap) it would be a .32 Regulation Police, and if not a .32 Hand Ejector Target. Either way it is a scarce gun with the adjustable rear sight and worth more than one with the standard sight. I will leave it up to those more familiar with selling prices to provide a value.
You may consider obtaining a factory historical letter on it, which would confirm it left the factory with the Target sight and to where and when it shipped:
Firearm History Request - Smith & Wesson
Hope this is helpful.

It is a .32 HE target, I believe. It would have the SN stamped on the front of the grip frame if it had been shipped with target stocks, and would have the rebated back strap if it had been shipped as a RP target.

Thanks for clearing that up - I would say that it is a standard HE Target. no back strap cut and no ID on the front of the grip frame. What grips would come on this model? the black plastic type? or some kind of wood?

More likely the hard rubber type, but the factory letter would tell you this also.
