The V prefix IDs it as a military contract revolver made between 1942 and 1945. These are often called "Victory Models." There are some experts around here who can pin down an exact date more closely.
There are basically two flavors. The U.S. version was made in 38 Special and usually has a 4" barrel. The model made for Great Britain was in 38 S&W (not 38 Special) and usually has a 5" barrel.
Many of the British guns were butchered after the war with the barrels cut down, cheap nickel plating, and often reaming to accept the 38 Special cartridge. These are not the best shooting guns.
The problem with the 38 S&W is that ammo is hard to find and pricey. For the casual shooter the 38 Special is a much better choice.
