Question Identifying 2 S&W revolvers

I gave it a lot of thought before posting this thread, I read a lot here on the forum, and made some advance. How ever I'd like the opinion of those around here that know more about guns.

So here they are, one nickel plated one sort of blued(?)
Guns 1and2.jpg

First lets talk about the one I found was the oldest the blued one.
Gun 1-1.jpg

What I found:
1.- Hand ejector, no model #
2.- Serial # has no letters only 660XXX and it is on both frame and bottom of the barrel
3.- Caliber is marked "38 S&W Special CTG" on the side of the barrel
4.- Barrel length according to my measures is 6"
5.- It has adjustable sights pre-war type I guess
Extras. It has 5 screws, square K frame, under the S&W logo it has the marking "Marca Registrada" in spanish and the grips
are not the original ones.

Gun 1-2.jpg

Gun 1-3.jpg

Gun 1-4.jpg

From what I read it was build around 1942-43, But I have no idea of model name. I'll appreciate all your help.

P.S. Can this gun shoot +P charges?
Thanks!

On next message the other one.

Question Other gun

Next up a gun I think doesn't belong in this category...

Gun 2-1.jpg

This one is nickel plated and I found this about it

1.- Model 10-5
2.- The Serial # starts D425XXX only found on the frame so far...
3.- Cal. "38 S&W Special CTG" on the side of the barrel
4.- Barrel Length according to measurement is 5"
5.- Fixed sights
Extra: It has 3 screws, Square butt K frame

Gun 2-2.jpg

Gun 2-3.jpg

About this I found it was made around 1972-73

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.

The older gun is called a .38 Military & Police target model. With that serial number and some of the features observable on the gun it would date to the late 1930s. By 1942 S&W was deeply involved in wartime production and commercial production was essentially non-existent.

The gun will not come apart in your hand if you shoot +P ammunition, but why stress a nice old classic with hotter loads? S&W advise owners of older guns not to shoot +P ammo in any gun that doesn't have a model number (that is, manufactured before 1957).

You have correctly identified your second gun. It is a model 10-5. You can safely shoot all the +P ammo you want to in this one.

All concerns regarding +P ammo are based on the assumption it is a "hot load." This is not correct as +P is loaded well below the maximum allowable pressure for the caliber. I worry a bit about guns made before around 1925 or so due to the vagaries in metal tempering up to that time. A K frame made in the 1930s would not cause me a moment of hesitation in using +P if I wanted to do it.

Again, here's my 1942 M&P pictured with 500 rounds of Remington +P and some of the 600 rounds of +P+ I ran through it to see if anything would happen. It came as absolutely no surprise to me at all when nothing did. Understand the revolver was already much used and well worn when I started. Still no observable effect. Others disagree, and issue cautions regarding the use of +P in older guns, but I don't understand their concern with a load that is well under maximum allowable pressure.

Europe's CIP standard pressure for the 38 Special is higher than our +P version.

I noticed the difference when I bought some imported stuff. Feels a bit hotter but no ill effects.

Thanks for the welcome to the forum, I got confused because on this link there were some dates, but it was for N frames, How to identify a date of S&W but thanks for the correction

#660XXX probably shipped in 1936-37. That was in the midst of the Great Depression, and guns sold very slowly, so it is often the case that guns stayed in factory inventory for prolonged periods prior to shipping.

Gracias por la bienvenida!
Those revolvers are nice. I'm eager to try them, but here in Mexico laws require more paper work for going to a range and shooting them, but I'm already working on that, wish me luck
