Default Who wants to cry? Or who wants a project? Triple-Lock

Coming up in an auction July 19th. Triple-Lock for sale. Auction description is:

"Estimated Price: $100 - $300

Description: Serial No .8221 Smith and Wesson .44 Triple Lock pistol in very poor condition with great deal of rust. Good for parts, but comes with soft leather case. Overall length 11 - ½" and barrel length 6"."

Tell me one of you guys can save this.

First picture? Not so bad:

Then OMG:

Looks like some of the grunge on the cylinder is this disintegrating case:

Depending on how badly rusted the bore is, it may only take a new cylinder and possibly some internals to make it a shooter.

Ouch!!! That one is going to need a lot of 4/0 steel wool, elbow grease and cold blue.

I'd buy it, at the price estimated. I've seen worse rescued as "shooter" grade.

Merely a flesh wound. Shame it hasn't already been submerged in KROIL.

I was told by a dealer once, "Seriously? You don't much about marks on guns. That star means it belonged to a sheriff!"
When I looked at him, I realized he was in fact serious. I seriously gave him his gun back and seriously walked away.
That mark is a factory rework stamp.
I still think that can be fixed.

I was going to make the Kroil joke but that poor girl is just hurting. Is that the kind of damage Fords or someone can resurrect?

I have a T-Lock in my S&W Rusty Relic collection that once was the rarest production T-Lock, a 7 1/2 inch barrel with service sights, that has about 3 inches cut off the barrel with a machete. The outside has more craters than the Moon, but inside it's minty and shoots just fine. It was captured from a rebel in the Haiti Banana Wars in the 1920s by a Marine Corp friend of mine, Sgt. Ed Craig, later Lt. General in WW2. Ed.

A lot of times it looks worse than it really is. In the second picture, you can't really see the cylinder due to all the fuzz stuck to it.

Somebody buy it and clean it up. You won't have to worry about hurting its collector value.

Well, here you go gentlemen, we found a sucker, er, artisan, who is game to try this. If several of us pitch in $5.00-$10.00 each we can buy it and let keith44spl give this one a restoration/resurrection.

Anybody willing to pitch in?

Talking Triple Lock

If you don't do the work yourself plan on having a bucket of money on the ready. Ask me how I know this. I've got a 4" that letters as a nickel gun that was put on a wire wheel for starters and no stampings. Its at Fords for polishing and will be engraved. Its been there since Jan. and was at the gunsmith 2 years. Engraving will take another year. Parts took another 18 months to find. If you are in it for the long run, go for it. If you want a shooter, 2 years at the least. If its all there maybe a year. I have seen some really bad guns comeback from the parts bin. It can be done! I love these kind of projects.

That auction house is about an hours drive from home. Wouldn't mind a 44 TL. I have half a mind to go over an take a closer look at it before the sale. as I suspect that there may be some bad pitting under all that rust.
Bought my 45LC TL last year there for a reasonable price but it wasn't nearly as finish challenged as this one. Plus there is an 18% buyers premium.

It looks save-able. Extra deep pitting pitting may be present looking at the pics enlarged. But it's surprising what can be removed,,and what can be hidden w/engraving. An excellent TIG welder can be handy to know too.
I wonder how the bore and chambers survived.
If badly pitted, perhaps a re-do to 45Colt would be in order to clean them up. I'd like to save the original bbl and cylinder if possible.
Orphan 44TL bbls show up for sale, but I can't remember a TL cylinder in a long while.
Hate to see it 'go to parts',,I'd be drawn to that as a project gun like an addict if I saw it at a show or in a shop.
But it'll probably go for more than the estimate w/those grips.

I'll chip in the $5 or $10 for 44 Spl to bring it back to life.
How about a lottery to own it after words?

Very cool. Eddie Craig collected several good pistols in the banana wars and lost them on a shipwreck, as I recal from one of the historical books. Awesome that you knew him personally and have one of his war souvenirs!!!

Hmmm, I think that needs more than a little Mothers mag polish. I also think it can be salvaged, (depending on how bad the barrel and chambers are). It would have to be a labor of love, otherwise it would be expensive.

I'd contribute to the cause. IF the gun would be sold here & the money donated to the forum when it's done.

Is it prohibited from revealing where the auction is? I found it quite easily, by the way, and, as it turns out, it is only 40 miles from where I live.

You are not supposed to post a link to an open auction, IIRC.
If you found it easily, probably anyone else who is interested could do likewise. I found it in a few seconds.

Your kidding me?

My misses doesn't say too much about what I bring home but if I brought that one home I'd never hear the end of it. It looks like a diamond in the rough. But the only thing good about it is the serial number.

It didn't sell to an on site bidder it sold to an internet bidder. I'm hoping it will be a fun project. I can't wait to get it cleaned up and evaluate the actual condition. I'm thinking positive concerning the bore and cylinder.

I'm thinking the bore and chambers are OK. It's unusual to know how the rust damage on many guns came about. But in this case we do know it was from laying on a moist or wet case and the damage is only on the one side that was in contact with that case. The top side didn't rust because it was not laying in contact and neither were the chambers and bore. So at worst, I surmise if there is any damage, it's only minor surface rust from the moist atmosphere in the case. Fingers crossed!

That was my thought exactly. With a 1911 mfg. date this should ship without an ffl?

Wow, this seems rather high. Just last month, I purchased a Triple Lock, nickel, with a 4 inch barrel, for not that much more! Yes, parts were renickeled, but it did not have the condition issues this one has.

The auction site stated sold to On-site bidder?? I am curious how you know it sold to an Internet bidder?

I am betting that the price went that high because of this thread. I had a bid in on the gun, but right after the thread started, it went up well beyond my interest level.

I know it sold to an internet bidder because I bought it with a bid on the internet. I bid in advance so that may be why it shows as an on site bid.

OK thanks -please keep us up to date on your purchase. The company must have made a mistake in posting, since I have bought several guns on that site with advanced bids and they have all stated Internet Bidder as the winner. I am holding out hope that your 44 turns out to be a winner.

If you have a Curio & Relic license, it could be shipped on it, as it is over 50 years old.

Antique arms are those that were manufactured before January 1st, 1899. Antiques, muzzleloaders, and replicas of muzzleloaders fall into this catagory.
