Default Model 10-Receipt Question

Hello All,

A friend, customer, of mine recently purchased a Model 10, SN-C508842.
He also has , supposedly, the original receipt dating to 1960. My book shows this was made in 1961-1962. Possible, or is something fishy? I googled the company the receipt is from, interesting, and will post his email here as to help with my request. I haven't seen the gun yet, but I'm sure I will soon.
Thanks for all you can add to this inquiry.

Lee

Published serial number ranges are very rough estimates. There are plenty of guns shipping months to decades (?!) out of "known" SN date ranges and sequences, and information like this actually helps to narrow down the true shipping dates. A popular gun/barrel length would tend to leave the factory faster and more consistently in production order, but even one of these might get put in the back of the safe and be missed while newer guns enter and leave.

The documentation is a year off from what a book lists? Yeah, so what? Happens all the time and often it's a lot more than one year. I would trust the actual sales receipt, made by a real person holding the gun in his hand at the time, a lot more than I would a published list in a book.

On my list I have one with a SN about 18,000 lower which shipped in early December 1960. But serial numbers do not track well with shipment dates, as S&W did not ship from their inventory in serial number order.

I thought the published tracking could be way off, interesting to follow the history of these firearms though.
I thank you all for the replies and will pass it along.

Thanks again.

Also, remember, the dates in the SCSW are ship dates, not manufacture dates. so it is entirely possible to have been pulled off the shelf a bit earlier than the published date after being there for quite some time.
